Chapter 13 Nothing to Do With You
In the next few days, I worked overtime more than frequently.
Susan’s mother fell ill, and she had to return to her hometown
to take care of her. I took over her work and earned double pay.
Every night I returned to the staff dorm at 2 a.m., took a quick
shower, and collapsed into bed.
At six the next morning, the alarm would jolt me awake.
I washed up with my eyes still closed and clocked in at the
hospital ten minutes later. I always skipped breakfast.
After three consecutive days of this, my body started to give
out. My chest began to flutter with palpitations.
As a doctor, I knew it was serious.
One of these days, I might just collapse in the department.
But there was no choice left for me. I needed money.
I sipped herbal medicine while checking my phone, hoping to find a decent loan company.
Lamar’s message popped up. I opened it, only to be met with a

barrage of angry questions.
“Alexandra, are you seriously not coming back?
“You’re not replying. Are you fooling around with some other
guy?
“If you don’t reply soon, I’ll show up at your hospital!”
Men had that pathetic sense of entitlement and Lamar was no
exception.
The colder you treated him, the more he clung to you.
I rubbed my temples, deleted the chat, and couldn’t be bothered
to respond.
He wouldn’t dare show up at the hospital. He was simply too
proud to do so.
The next second, I opened a loan app.
After what happened with Alivia last time, I was extra careful
this time, scrutinizing every option.
But I still couldn’t find a reliable one.
With a sigh, I stood up from the bench in the corridor.

Probably from skipping breakfast for days, I felt lightheaded
from anemia and plopped right back down.
Nia noticed and asked worriedly, “Xandra, do you want to take
a break? The director came by earlier asking if the ER needed
more staff. I said no because I saw you were covering…
“Should I go now and let him know?”
I shook my head gently.
Lab research used to be tougher than this. Just a few years later,
I became weaker.
I whispered to Nia, “Don’t mention this to the director yet. I have
my own plans.“”
She knew I was trying to make extra money, so she didn’t object.
She just reminded me to take care of my health.
Worried I might really burn out, I carved out a bit of time
during lunch for a quick nap.
I sat in an empty chair in the department, leaned back, and fell
asleep.
Half–asleep, I felt someone lift me off the chair.
But I was too sleepy to open my eyes. I couldn’t see who it was.

When I woke up again, I was lying on a chair with a thin
blanket tucked over me.
The setting sun filtered through the sheer curtain. The room.
was bathed in a warm, golden light.
I sat up with a jolt, reaching for my phone in my pocket, only to
find it missing.
I looked around and realized I was in Terrell’s office.
It was clear that he had taken my phone.
That was why I hadn’t heard the alarm and overslept.
I rushed to the computer to check the time. It was already 6 p.m.
My mind went blank.
What about my shift? If I missed it, my pay would get docked!
I quickly threw on my lab coat and headed out, only to crash.
straight into Terrell.
The impact knocked me back a step, and I landed on the floor.
Terrell frowned and helped me up, looking at me like I was a
complete fool.

“What’s the rush for?”
I brushed off the dust from my coat and shot him a look of
blame.
Unable to take the stare, he grumbled, “Relax, I gave you half a
day off. Sleeping is officially approved.”
Then he grabbed my arm and started dragging me toward the
hospital cafeteria. “You slept like a pig. Look at your dark circles. How many nights have you gone without proper rest?”
I yanked my arm free and stopped walking.
“Terrell, this has nothing to do with you.”
