The wolf followed silently.
<
The setting sun cast long shadows.
I was thinking.
I knew why the beastmen didn’t run away at first.
And why they would become villains later on.
It was because this world was cruel to them first.
I hesitated, glancing at the wolf.
“Hey… don’t be scared. As long as you’re with
me, I won’t hurt you, okay?”
The wolf’s hand tightened.
I realized we were holding hands.
His palm was warm.
He looked at me, then loosened his grip and
shifted position.
He laced his fingers with mine.
We held hands.
“Got it, Mistress.”
My eyes widened. “…What did you call me?”
Then.
My low ponytail loosened, my hair falling.
And the wolf had my pink hair tie.
“You asked me what gift I wanted.”
He raised his eyebrows.
“Give me this.”

When we got home, the snake and cockatiel
were there.
I called out to them.
“I got you new boxes, wanna see?”
The cockatiel had a game console, glancing at
the bird cage, scoffing.
“It’s so cheap, I won’t live in it.”
The snake was more polite.
Even though the box was empty, he slithered
inside and did a circle.
Then.
He rested on the wall, tilting his head, looking
at me.
<
So cute!
I nuzzled his little head.
The cockatiel scoffed.
I asked.
“If you don’t like it, I can return it? It cost a lot.”
“…Fine, return it.”
That’s what he said.
But later that night, I went to get water.
I saw the cockatiel sneaking around, one foot outside the cage, looking around.
Then.
We looked at each other.
<
The air was awkward.
I almost choked on my water and waved my
hand.
“I didn’t see anything, keep going…”
The cockatiel flapped his wings and flew over.
He turned human, blocking my way.
“Don’t laugh!”
He was fierce.
But because he didn’t have a shirt on, I saw he
was red from his neck to his stomach.
So obvious.
He argued, “I was just testing it! Testing, you
get it?”

I nodded, holding back my laugh. “Go test it,
and tell me what you think.”
Looks like I won’t have to return it.
I put down my cup and turned to leave.
Then I heard the cockatiel fall.
I cried, “Are you trying to con me?”
He sat up from the floor, leaning against the
couch, covering his eyes.
“…I’m fine. Go away, I don’t need you.”
His golden hair covered his eyes, showing
weakness.
