I can’t believe it. What am I even thinking…”
“She’s fine, she can’t be…”
“Another awful family member, completely clueless. His wife has passed away, and he doesn’t even know.”

Seeing Lachlan’s indifference toward me, I felt my spirit leave me entirely, and I gave up hope.
After a long silence, Mrs. Chen spoke cautiously:
“Sir, perhaps you should go to the hospital and see… just in case…”
She couldn’t bring herself to finish the thought.
Just in case what? Just in case I’m already gone?
But I am indeed gone.
I thought Lachlan would burst with anger, but he just let out a quiet “Mm.”
Then, like a shell of a man, he stumbled out the door.
The maids exchanged glances, their eyes filled with a mix of emotions.
All the way, he kept reassuring himself:
“It can’t be. It must be someone with the same name. Nora just gave birth to my child; she can’t have suddenly died.”
“And she never mentioned she was sick. Everything’s fine, it must be…”
But I told him the day I was diagnosed with cancer.
He brought Adeline into our home, saying he wanted to marry her, that he needed to make it up to her.
When I discovered his affair, I felt like I lost myself, claiming I was the one wishing for my death, not Adeline.
But he blocked me with his invented ability to see people’s lifespans.
Claiming I was lying, mimicking others, bullying a dying Adeline.
He was the one who didn’t believe me.
Lachlan went to the hospital and couldn’t find me, so he had to ask the doctors everywhere about my whereabouts.
He happened to run into my attending physician.
Hearing the doctor say he knew me, Lachlan was overjoyed.
“My wife is in that ward, I’m here to see her.”
But the doctor looked at him, stunned:
“Why are you only here now?” His voice was filled with regret.
“Wha… what happened?” Lachlan’s face showed panic.
“Doctor, please tell me where she is.”
The doctor gave him a look, pointing to the floor directory sign: “Take the elevator to the fourth basement level, go to the morgue”
Lachlan’s pupils suddenly contracted, and he roared:
“Impossible! She was fine before.”
“Your wife was diagnosed with brain cancer a week ago. Her life was already on a countdown with only a few days left.”
After a pause, the doctor continued:
<
“By the way, she left a final message for you. ‘Lachlan, take care of our daughter, or even as a ghost, I won’t forgive you.”
After being scolded by the doctor, Lachlan staggered to the morgue. When the staff opened my body bag, he seemed to finally realize I was truly gone.
Lachlan’s face instantly turned pale.
My body was already cold and lifeless.
I thought Lachlan would at least cry when he saw me since we had been married for three years. Surely, he must have had some feelings for
- me.
But unexpectedly, he started vomiting heavily.
Worried about staining my body, he immediately covered his mouth with his hands, trying to hold it back.
His eyes were bloodshot as he knelt, hugging the trash can until nothing was left to vomit.
He could only dry heave, coughing up blood with each retch.
The staff was shocked and went to take him away.
He refused, crying, hugging my lifeless body under the harsh white lights.
I floated in front of him, face–to–face.
He couldn’t see or hear me.
I said, “Lachlan, I hate you, but I can’t help but love you.”
That night, when my head hurt so much, I kept banging it against the wall while crying.
“Lachlan, it hurts so much, I’m in so much pain I’m dying.”
“Please, just look at me one more time.”
I kept crying, kept shouting hoarsely, but the dark night swallowed all my pleas.
How I wished this torment was just a nightmare that I would wake up from.
Wake up to find him holding me affectionately.
He would kiss me and say, “Don’t be scared, it was just a nightmare.”
But no.
I floated out, seeing him holding someone else.
I was truly gone.
In his arms.
From then on, I would never be there again.
Behind me, my lawyer arrived as well, directly handing my will to him, conveying my words.
“Lachlan, you must take good care of our daughter, this is what you owe me.”
After reading the will, seeing that I left all my personal assets to our daughter, without mentioning him even once.
Finally, he broke down in tears.
Finally, he accepted my death kneeling by my body repenting over and over
