I was getting a little embarrassed, but then I remembered I had another shield. “You’re cleared, but what about Charlie? He has another family out there. I can’t believe you’d do Sophia dirty.”
Christopher raised his hand. “I swear on my happiness, Charlie didn’t cheat. He doesn’t have another family out there.”
So, I asked what the story was. Food could wait. I dragged Christopher to Sophia’s place, and what met us was a trashed room. Charlie had one hand over his chest, while the other was popping meds into his mouth. Shards of glass littered the ground, and a guy I’d never seen before knelt before them.
I’d never seen Sophia so angry before. She noticed us coming in and held my hand. “I was on the wrong side of the fence this time, Bianca.”
“Um, what happened, Sophia?”
Sophia’s chest was heaving with rage. “The bastard forced the poor girl to go through a cosmetic surgery and started a scandal all for the inheritance.”
Christopher went over to the guy and kicked him down. “He’s a distant relative, and life was hard on him, so we gave him a job. We thought we’d give him a chance to raise his family, but greed got to him, and he tried to break Charlie and Sophia up.
“He knows Charlie and Sophia have no kids, but they’re too deep in love, so a homewrecker wouldn’t work. He made up a story about Charlie’s illegitimate daughter and subjected her to cosmetic surgery since she was barely a toddler. They made sure she ended up looking like Charlie.”
I couldn’t believe that was the truth. All it took was some distant relative’s deception and an outsider’s lies, and our relationship crumbled. Sophia and I bought the story like some dumb damsels.
Charlie called the cops, and Sophia slapped the man before kicking him out. Christopher fired him, and they exposed his corruption case back when he was working with them. The villains were punished.
Sophia and I exchanged a look Charlie said solemnly, “Now you have the truth. I never lied to you, Sophia. I never cheated on you. I told you, even if you couldn’t give us any children, it’s no problem. We can go childless for life.”
Tapping his head, she asked, “Can you shut up with that rhetoric already? I’m already pregnant, you know. The rich life did wonders for my body.”
I looked at her in disbelief. “But you shouldn’t drink when you’re pregnant!”
“The baby’s tough. I only found out I was pregnant after we were saved. It’s why I tried to convince you to date again. I wanted you to fall in love again because I know I wouldn’t be alone even if you did remarry. Well, so much for the plan. Now that we know the truth, all we have to do is wait for the baby to come to us.” The news excited me, and Charlie, with his trembling hands, finished the last of his pills. “Is that true, Sophia?”
“Well, do you think I look pregnant? And I didn’t drink. They were only mocktails. Mr. Quincy knows I’m expecting, so he made sure I had no alcohol.”
Oh yeah, now that Sophia mentioned it, she did look rounder. I thought it was just the slow life adding some weight to her. After all, we were out here having fun for months. We let loose,
Charlie was still worried. He grabbed Sophia and scheduled a checkup. Christopher followed them, looking envious. “I wonder when I’ll get a kid of my own.” Yeah, I would not stand for that. Christopher then stuffed something into my hand. I opened the box and saw a diamond ring inside.
“I spent a fortune making this, and I designed the ring myself. I hope you’ll forgive me, though? I swear I’ll tell you everything next time.”
I smiled. Forgiveness? Well, that depended on how much work Christopher would put in.
