Chapter 9
The lights in the bar were dim and hazy, with jazz music lazily flowing through the air.
Eric leaned back in the leather armchair, his slender fingers pinching the whiskey glass. The ice had long since melted, leaving the drink tasteless. and bland.
Clara leaned on his shoulder, her red lips close to his ear, and whispered warmly, “Eric, come to my place tonight?”
He absentmindedly murmured, but his eyes were fixed on the screen of his phone.
There was no new information Purchase completed
By this time in the past, Elie’s message would have already exploded.
She would encounter stray cats on the roadside, take photos of the new flower shop downstairs from the company, complain about the food in the cafeteria being too salty, and ask him what he wanted to eat for dinner…
Tedious, boring, yet densely packed his life.
Since when did her messages become less frequent?
Eric frowned and absentmindedly clicked open Elie’s chat window.
The last message was still three days ago. She sent a document with a businesslike note: “Mr. Lawrence, please review.”
Turning back up, the last private message before she resigned was: “Mr.

Lawrence, rest assured, I will not like you anymore in the future.”
His chest suddenly tightened.
“Eric? Clara pinched his arm in annoyance, “Are you even listening to me?”
Eric came to his senses and casually raised his lips, “What did you say?”
Clara glared at him coquettishly and said, “I mean, we haven’t in a long time…”
Before the words had even finished, Eric’s phone suddenly vibrated.
It was the assistant’s phone.
He almost immediately picked up the phone and said, “Speak.”
“Mr. Lawrence! the assistant’s voice was somewhat urgent, “Ms. Roberts. has terminated the lease on the apartment, left the keys with the property management, and all her belongings have been moved out!”
Eric suddenly stood up, knocking over the wine glass, and the amber liquid splashed onto Clara’s skirt.
She screamed, but he acted as if he hadn’t heard, clutching his phone tightly and coldly saying, “Find out where she went.”
“It has been checked, the assistant said cautiously, “Ms. Roberts bought a ticket to go back to her hometown, but… she got off midway and her whereabouts are now unknown.”
Eric’s temples were throbbing.
She actually hid from him.

This realization made his heart feel like it was being tightly squeezed by invisible hands, and an overwhelming sourness surged in his heart.
The emotions that had been suppressed deep in my heart, at this moment, burst out like a seed breaking through the soil.
Elie never went missing, even when he called her at 3 a.m. to deliver documents, she would reply instantly with “Okay, Mr. Lawrence.”
But now, she evaporated into the air like a drop of water, leaving no trace. behind.

“Keep searching, he said in a low voice, “even if we have to search the entire country, we must find her.”
She hung up the phone and Clara could no longer maintain the gentle and delicate appearance she had just had. She was so angry that her face. turned pale, and she asked incredulously:
“Eric! Did you leave me for an insignificant secretary?”
Eric then noticed the wine stain on her dress.
He rubbed his forehead, took out a few bills and threw them on the table: “You can call a car to take yourself back.”
“What do you mean? Clara grabbed his wrist, her nails almost digging into his skin.”
“Weren’t you supposed to accompany me tonight? Elie is just a stand–in, she can leave whenever she wants, but you still have to go…”
“Enough, Eric coldly interrupted her.”
Clara froze.

He impatiently withdrew his hand.
Eric, who had always spoiled her endlessly, now looked at her with a disdain and coldness she had never seen before.
“I’m a bit tired and not in the mood to argue. Let’s take a break and calm down for a while.”
