Chapter 11

“You young people are so unreasonable! Dr. Albergo said it herself, is there still room for doubt?” The director found the person in front of him simply inexplicable.

“You don’t love her either, your heart is all set on another woman, so why are you so excited about Dr. Albergo get- ting married?”

Upon hearing the director’s words, Silvano weakly released his hand.

He remembered Maddalena’s cold and expressionless eyes at the airport, as well as her soft plea. She even used that familiar term of endearment, as if she had gone back to the time when they were still in love.

But he… he chose Vittoria and her daughter, leaving Maddalena behind.

He suddenly realized that he seemed to have lost something very important.

Silvano unconsciously looked at Giovanna and saw her let out a disappointed sigh.

“Silvano, you have disappointed me too much,” Giovanna turned around and walked away unsteadily.

Silvano sat slumped in the chair, feeling utterly lost. A sense of panic unlike anything he had ever experienced gripped his heart tightly.

Silvano fumbled for his phone and dialed Maddalena’s number.

“I’m sorry, the number you have dialed is currently switched off.”

The cold, mechanical female voice repeated over and over, feeling like a bucket of ice water being poured over his head, almost suffocating him.

Silvano didn’t give up and called again, but the phone was still turned off.

He remembered the bulging suitcase that Maddalena had packed, and a bold yet terrifying suspicion formed in his mind.

He immediately called the airport to ask if Maddalena had boarded the flight to Switzerland.

“I’m sorry, sir, the Ms. Albergo you mentioned did not take the flight to Switzerland today.” The airport staff’s answer suddenly put his mind at ease.

What if Maddalena didn’t go to Switzerland? Did she go home?

Thinking of this, Silvano could no longer sit still. He didn’t even pay attention to Vittoria and her daughter standing beside him.

He got up and rushed out of the hospital, heading home. Racing all the way, he finally saw the familiar gate. He trem-

The door was opened… Silvano rushed in, but the room was quiet. Quiet as if the whole world had died.

In the living room, there was no Maddalena’s suitcase. In the bedroom, the bed was neatly made, with no signs of anyone having slept in it. In the wardrobe, there were no Maddalena’s clothes. Even in the study, Maddalena’s favorite books were nowhere to be found.

The traces of another person, vanislied without a trace.

He searched the room frantically, as if he had gone mad, hoping to find even the slightest trace left by Maddalena, whether it be a note or a message.

However, there was nothing.

She left his world like a gust of wind, silently and without a trace.

Silvano slumped against the wall, then slid weakly to the ground. The empty room was filled only with the sound of his heavy breathing echoing.

Silvano clenched his fists tightly, his fingernails deeply embedded in his flesh, yet he felt no pain.

Maddalena’s figure kept coming back and forth in his mind. He remembered.

He and Maddalena were childhood sweethearts. Sharing hardships and depending on each other. But now he pushed her away with his own hands.

They became strangers to each other.
