Chapter 8
I lunged for it but missed, watching helplessly as it sank into the landscape pool below.
Selena smirked proudly, while Colin stayed silent with his lips pressed tight.
Without hesitation, I dashed down the stairs.
It was early spring, but the wind still cut sharply.
The water in the pool came up past my calves, and the cold crept through my whole body.
I clenched my teeth and searched the water over and over.
Passersby glanced at me curiously, then quickly looked away.
Colin couldn’t stand it any longer. He jumped into the pool to grab my
hand.
“That’s enough! Why do you have to do this?”
But I ignored him and kept looking for the amulet.
Finally, I caught sight of a chain.
I lunged forward. Water splashed all over me, soaking me completely, but I barely noticed.
Just as I reached out, I felt a strong pull.
The amulet got caught in the sewer, and the thin chain snapped under the
strain.

The amulet was swept away into the sewer with the current.
The light in my eyes dimmed.
I climbed out of the pool and turned away without looking back.
Cold sweat dripped down, and my stomach hurt so badly that I fought to stay conscious and keep walking.
Only after I was out of Colin’s sight did my vision darken, and I fainted.
When I woke up, a kind stranger was taking me to the hospital.
The doctor who treated me was the same one as before. Seeing I was awake, he gave me advice.
“I told you to come earlier, but you refused. Now the cancer has spread all over your body. Even God couldn’t save you!
“This pain is only the start. When your condition worsens, the pain will kill you!”
I forced a weak smile, in my own way grateful.
“Thank you, doctor. I know my condition, but I don’t want to die alone.
here.”
“Forget it. I’ll give you some painkillers. If it hurts too much, take a few pills.”
After he spoke, he turned to write the prescription.
Before leaving, he kindly closed the curtain for me.
Soon, another patient was wheeled to the bed beside me, and I heard a familiar voice.
“Colin, it hurts so much. Will my face be scarred? I’m scared!”
olin sounded distracted. After Selena repeated herself, he snapped back.
No, silly. I’ll find the best beautician. There won’t be any marks.”
Thank you, Colin. You’re so good to me.”
turned out that Colin had brought Selena to the hospital.
1 made sense. He worried so much about her. He wouldn’t ignore her acial injury.
The doctor teased them with a smile, sounding envious.
Sir, your wife’s injury is minor. It’s nothing serious. You don’t need to worry.”
Colin seemed stunned and murmured, “She’s not…”
Thank you, doctor,” Selena interrupted with a chuckle.
The doctor didn’t notice anything strange and kept chatting.
You can’t let such a pretty face get scratched. Sir, you need to protect her better next time.”
Perhaps Colin looked displeased. The doctor finally sensed something. was off. After cleaning and redressing the wound, he left.
After a pause, Selena spoke gently, “Colin, it’s okay. I believe Naomi lidn’t mean it. Don’t blame her.”
Don’t bring it up. She was wrong. No matter what, she shouldn’t have attacked you!” Colin sounded annoyed and impatient.
But Selena’s voice stayed sweet. “You’re so nice to me, Colin.
Just then, a nurse pulled back the curtain between us.
