The day Ryan returned just happened to be the company’s major project gala. The ballroom was packed with industry elites and top execs.
Ryan’s mom, Olivia Travis, scolded playfully, “If it weren’t for this party, I bet you’d still be stuck in Canada babysitting Rachel. You forget your parents exist now?”
Ryan instinctively glanced over at me.

He stepped up awkwardly, trying to explain. “There was a contract that needed signing at the Canadian branch. I stayed a few extra days.”
“Oh wow, look who it is the golden couple of the business world! You two haven’t been seen together in ages!”
A few friends from the industry group came over to tease us.
“Now that you are, it’s seriously unfair how good you look together.”
“Hard to believe. Ms. Camden used to be a total heartbreaker here. She had a new guy on her arm every week!”
“Props to Mr. Morris for taming her!”
I smiled casually. “Oh no, we’re getting divorced.”
Dead silence. It was as if someone had hit a mute button.
Only Ryan stood there, frozen, eyes dark like a storm was brewing. He just stared at me, heavy and unreadable.

The others finally realized that something was amiss. “Julia, you’re joking, right?”

I took a sip of wine and replied lightly, “The paperwork’s already filed. Ryan, let’s sign it after the party.”
Ryan said nothing. He just grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me aside. “Come with me. We need to talk.”
And right on cue, my best friend, Sabrina Radley, walked in.

Ryan froze. His expression cracked, eyes wide, voice shaking, “You’re pregnant?”
The surprise, the happiness that rushed into his eyes, hit me with such twisted satisfaction I could barely breathe.
“Yeah,” I said calmly, smiling.
“Two weeks along.”
He looked stunned. Disbelief all over his face. “Two weeks?”
“That’s right. Two weeks.” I nodded, lips curved slightly.
The hope in his eyes shattered instantly.
And all that came in its place was a cold, simmering rage.
His jaw clenched. Veins popped on the back of his hand. He stared at me like he was trying to read the truth straight off my face.
I gave a sharp laugh and yanked my hand free. “Ryan, ever since Rachel came back, have we even touched each other?”

A wave of shocked gasps rippled through the crowd.
“Julia, are you saying you cheated while married?”
I laughed, my voice laced with mockery. “And you think I’m the only one?”

The soft background music died instantly. The massive LED screen in the middle of the banquet hall lit up, and there it was. A full–screen selfie of Rachel straddling Ryan, wearing nothing but racy lingerie, kissing him passionately.
The room, once filled with laughter and chatter, fell dead silent. Every single person stared at the screen.
“Ryan,” I said coolly, “hooking up with your adopted little sister? That’s a whole new level of disgusting.”
