Chapter 12
“I believe you,” Dorian said without hesitation. Of course he did. He thought she loved him too much to lie.
When the car arrived at her apartment complex, Dorian got out with her.
Irene was just about to head upstairs when Dorian suddenly reached out and caught her wrist. He asked, “Aren’t you going to invite me up?”
Back in their previous life, this had been around the time Dorian started hinting that he wanted to sleep with her.
Because Dorian’s childhood sweetheart’s health was declining, and he needed to buy time. Earning Irene’s absolute trust was the fastest way.
Most women were sentimental, and their first man would always leave a lasting imprint.
n–to make
Therefore, Dorian wanted to be that man–to make her fall head over heels..
Irene held back a smile and sweetly replied, “Oh, I forgot to tell you–Valerie just got back to Eldraeth City. You’ve met her, right? She’s staying with me for a few days. Want to come up and hang out with us?”
Valerie had been her friend since middle school and roommate in high school. They were as close as sisters.
And Valerie came from a long line of police officers.
Dorian had secrets and had been intentionally avoiding Valerie. Hearing her name now, he quickly shook his head and backed off. “You haven’t seen each other in a while. Spend some time together..
“Want me to order takeout for you two? You can eat and catch up,” Dorian added.
“Sure!” Irene replied cheerfully. “Butter–poached lobster!”
It was lobster season, but most of them were just shells with barely any meat.
“Got it.” Dorian watched her walk into the building, then looked up at the apartment windows with a suspicious frown. “Why does Valerie suddenly return?”
Inside the elevator, Irene waited until she reached a floor without cameras or outsiders before finally dropping the act. She leaned weakly against the wall and let out a long breath.
It had been a full day of battle–first with Henry’s family, then with Dorian. Irene was utterly drained.
After catching her breath, Irene entered the door code and stepped inside. The moment the lights came on, she froze.
“Rimi” Valerie stepped out of the bathroom with nothing but a bath towel, drying her hair with another.
“Valerie…” Irene stared in a daze. All she could see was the moment Valerie had fallen from the 26th floor.
Ever since then, Irene hadn’t been able to eat watermelon. Especially those pale, unripe ones. When they smashed on the ground, they looked far too much like her
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Valerie waved a hand in front of her face. “Miss me that much?”
Irene rushed forward and hugged Valerie tightly, whispering under her breath, “Valerie, is it really you?”
Valerie frowned, sensing something was off. “What’s wrong with her?”
“Kini, you look terrible. Go take a shower first. We’ll lie in bed and talk afterward.” Valerie gave her a gentle push toward the bathroom. Til get you some clothes.”
Irene walked inside like a puppet. The warm water finally brought her back to reality.

Chapter 12
Valerie had grown up in a police family, but later got into underground music and started dating a local street thug.
Irene had tried to talk her out of it, but Valerie hadn’t listened. She had been deeply in love.
One day, Irene got a call from Valerie–it was a farewell. She rushed to the scene, and the moment she arrived, she saw Valerie fall from the 26th floor.
Not long after, both Valerie and her father’s badge numbers were made public and officially retired.
That was when Irene learned that Valerie had been an undercover narcotics officer. She hadn’t even graduated from college when she was recruited to go undercover.
Valerie had done it to fulfill her father’s dying wish–to bring down a drug ring operating in Eldraeth City and the surrounding area.
Valerie had sacrificed herself to buy time for the police, allowing them to arrest the ringleader.
Most undercover officers‘ identities are never made public after death–unless their entire family line ends.
