Chapter 3
Karen didn’t say anything this time.
After a while, she said she was tired and wanted to take a nap.
After I watched her fall asleep, I secretly cut a few strands of her hair with scissors.
Because of my nervousness, my hands were shaking. I looked at Karen’s closed eyes, luckily there
was no sign of her waking up.
But just as I had the hair in my hands and hadn’t even put down the scissors, Karen, who had just been sound asleep, suddenly opened her eyes, looking wide awake and staring straight at me.
The voice sounded unusually indifferent, “Sis Bella, what were you doing holding that?”
“Why did you cut my hair?”
I stuttered, “Karen, I saw that your hair was tangled, so I cut it for you.”
This excuse, when spoken, even five–year–old children wouldn’t believe.

My heart sank as I realized that the act of taking hair was just to confirm the explosive suspicion in my mind. I couldn’t let Kevin know about this almost impossible idea that could never become a
reality.
The child did not understand what to do with the hair, but the adults definitely knew.
I tried to coax the five–year–old girl, “Karen, Sis Bella was wrong. Sis Bella wanted to secretly cut your hair… to keep it as a collection because she likes it.”
A thought crossed my mind, and I spoke about the thing she cared most about, “If you told your brother, he would be very angry and wouldn’t marry Sis Bella.”
“Did Karen want to see that Sis Bella couldn’t marry your brother?”
Karen was indeed anxious, seemingly possessed by an extraordinary obsession, and even abnormally shouted, “We must get married! You have to marry Brother Kevin!”
“I gave you my hair!”
I nodded quickly to comfort her and continued with her words.

“Married! Your brother and I were definitely getting married!”
I lowered my head and concealed the expression in my eyes as I watched Karen gradually recover
from her illness. I tightly clenched the hair in my pocket.

In the afternoon, I made up an excuse and hurriedly left the Smith residence. I took the hair of the
siblings, Kevin and Karen, and tested their DNA.
On the way back, Kevin called me and asked where I was.
I answered vaguely because I was nervous.
There was a moment of silence on the phone, and Kevin hesitantly asked, “Bella, did you eavesdrop on my mom’s door today?”
“Ah?” I pretended to be clueless.
“Karen and I said, if you heard something bad, that wasn’t my true opinion, just me agreeing with
my mom.”
I pretended to be angry and said, “What? You talked behind my back today without me knowing, what did you say?”
“How could I dare?” Kevin relaxed and laughed, “Bella, I have something to do, so I’ll hang up
first.”

During these few days of waiting, I did not actively go to the Smith residence again, and I declined
all their invitations.
I knew I seemed abnormal in their eyes, but now I care more about the results of the DNA test.
Throughout the whole process, my emotions were very complex.
I was feeling guilty, wondering if I had gone too far, but at the same time, I couldn’t help but think about Karen’s abnormal behavior, Kevin’s urging, the Smith family’s excessive enthusiasm
towards the savior, and everything that made me uneasy.
I waited for three days, and finally the result came out.
When I received the report, my heart was beating so fast that it felt like it was about to jump out of my throat.

I was so nervous that I didn’t dare to open it until I got home.
I took a deep breath and tremblingly opened it.

I was stunned.
Karen was not Kevin’s child.
