Chapter 2
The following day, after letting out blood, I nonchalantly grabbed
Some the water from the table and drank it.
Moments later, rashes erupted across my skin, itching so fiercely that I couldn’t help but scratch.
Jessica walked arm in arm with Eric as they came down the stairs, pretending to be worried.
“Mr. Sullivan, what’s happening to Maddie? Could she have picked up some unsavory illness from being with those men?”
She covered her mouth, pretending to be innocent. “Perhaps we should take Maddie to the hospital. After all, she was…”
Eric gazed at me with noticeable worry. “Are you experiencing any other issues?”
Yet, just as his hands reached for mine, he pulled them back.
“Have Henry take you to the hospital for an examination.”
The memory of the young man who, unafraid of catching H1N1, remained by my side for three days and nights during my intense fever, merged with the distant figure now in front of me.
I let out a sarcastic laugh. “Why don’t you ask Jessica what she added to
my water?”
Tears began to fill Jessica’s eyes.
“Mr. Sullivan, I didn’t do it! I was just concerned about Maddie.

“Plus, if it’s really that kind of illness, I wouldn’t worry about catching it myself, but my baby is still so tiny…”
Eric’s expression turned grim.
“So this is your plan? How could you be so cruel!
“I already swore I wouldn’t go near Jessica again. Why can’t you even spare an unborn child?

“Henry, take Maddie to the hospital immediately!”
At that moment, I received a message from the hospital saying my liver was a match for grandma’s and asking me to sign the donation consent.
I stopped arguing and nodded in agreement.
After picking up some allergy medication from the dermatologist, I headed directly to Grandma’s hospital room.
She was thrilled to see me, and we talked for a long time. Before I left, she pulled out a bright red dress and gave it to me.
“I made this myself. If I don’t make it through the surgery, let this wedding dress be with you on your special day.”
I reassured her the surgery would go well, though inside, I worried about keeping my secret as the donor.
Eric showed up just in time and hugged me gently.
“Grandma, Maddie is expecting. Following tradition, I’ll accompany you into the operating room tomorrow on her behalf.
“Relax, everything’s been sorted out. Dr. Basom will handle the surgery himself. It’ll be fine.”

Grandma squeezed his hand, comforted, “You have a child now. I can be at peace.”
With gratitude, I glanced at him, signed all the consent papers, and proceeded to finalize the admission steps for the pre–donation evaluations.
The next morning, Grandma and I were taken into side–by–side operating rooms. The liver harvesting procedure went smoothly.
By evening, as I slowly regained consciousness, I found myself unable to
open my eyes or move.
In this groggy state, I overheard Eric speaking with the doctor.
The doctor, sounding flustered, said, “Mr. Sullivan, the rejection of the frozen liver transplant was too severe. The old lady stopped breathing immediately.”
Jessica cried, “I’m so sorry, Mr. Sullivan. If the doctor hadn’t mentioned that Kitty needed the scent of fresh liver to regain her appetite, Grandma might still be alive.”
“But Kitty is the kitten grandma left me having her around makes me feel like grandma is still with me.
A ripping pain shot through my chest–I could barely breathe.
They had sacrificed grandma’s life for the sake of a cat!
Eric spoke with an unexpectedly calm tone. “It’s not your fault. Kitty’s life holds as much value–all lives are equal.”
He addressed the doctor, “Dr. Basom, a failed transplant can happen. About your reputational loss. Would 15 million dollars be enough?”
Howard Basom quickly assured, “Mr. Sullivan, please be confident. I’ll begin handling my departure paperwork tomorrow.

“No one else will ever learn about the exchange between Ms. Panutonn’s liver and the frozen one.”
