Chapter 23

The next day, Jack didn’t leave

Instead, he rented a spare room from one of the villagers and settled in like he planned to stay

Meanwhile, Olivia and Charlie didn’t wake up until nearly noon. After getting a literal taste of intimacy, Charlie turned into a whole new mangentler, more attentive, doting to the point of

ridiculous

He treated her like she was made of glass. Even insisted on helping her put on her socks and shoes

I told you I’m fine,Olivia muttered, face flushed with embarrassment. But Charlie was already kneeling down in front of her

He gently lifted her foot onto his thigh, rolled the sock up her ankle, then slipped her foot into the shoe. Same with the other. Only when both were on did he stand up, grinning like a fool, his eyes

practically crinkling with happiness

Just rest today, okay? I’ll head out to the fields myself. No need for you to get worn out.”

Faced with that kind of open affection, Olivia could only nod

If someone had told her months ago that she’d one day fall for a rugged farmer from the countryside, she would’ve laughed them out of the room

She was born into privilegepampered, polished, wanted by dozens. No way would a man like

Charlie have even made it onto her radar

But time and tenderness had a way of changing people

In the quiet warmth of life here, Olivia had been movedand last night, when they finally came together, it hadn’t been out of duty or impulse. It was her choice

Sitting at the edge of the bed now, she found herself blushing at the memory. She shook her head and decided to get some fresh air. Maybe pick a few vegetables

She had barely stepped out the door when she saw him

Jack. Standing just a few feet away.

He looked like he hadn’t slept all nightdark circles under his eyes, face drawn and weary. But the

moment he saw her, his expression lit up with hope

Olivia.”

He said her name with restraint, as if afraid he’d scare her away

She didn’t flinch. Didn’t even blink

You believe me now, don’t you?”

She knew he’d been there all night. Knew he’d heard everything. That had been the point. She’d staged the whole thing so he’d give up and finally leave. What she didn’t expectwas that he’d stay

Jack’s face flickered with embarrassmenthe knew he’d been caught. But he didn’t back down

Olivia, I don’t care about that. I don’t care what happened between you two. I know you don’t love him. You did it to spite me, and I deserved that. But I’ve learned my lesson. I’ve changed. The only woman I love now is you. Olivia, I’m sorry.”

He looked straight into her eyes, waiting, hopingbecause he remembered how much she used to love him. He thought all he had to do was apologize, and she’d fall back into his arms

But Olivia only felt tired

She stepped back from him

You don’t need to apologize. That’s all in the past. There’s nothing between us anymore.”

Seeing her walk away again, Jack reached out and grabbed her wrist, panic creeping into his voice

Olivia, pleaseif you don’t believe me, come back with me. I already talked to Emily. And I told your father I want to marry you. I’m serious about this!”

The more he said, the more impatient she got. She yanked her arm out of his grasp, her voice sharp. I’ve said it clearly enough, haven’t I? Jack, I don’t love you anymore. Staying here was my choice!”

Jack froze, stunned

You don’t love me? Then what, you love him? That guy? Even if you don’t want me anymore, you

don’t have to stay here living like this!”

Olivia stopped walking. Slowly turned around

I do love Charlie. And you know what, when you’re with someone you love, even the hardest days don’t feel like suffering.”

She said it simply. Calmly. And then she walked awayno hesitation, no regret

Jack stood there for a long time, watching her back disappear into the sunlit distance. And somehow, that one sentenceI love Charliehurt worse than hearing she’d slept with another

man

He realized, all at once, that Olivia was never coming back

He had lost her

And he had no one to blame but himself

His chest tightened with something raw and aching. He lifted a hand to his face, startled to find it

wet

He hadn’t even noticed he was crying
