Chapter 12
The Clarks had a townhouse in Raventon.
The ride back from the Royal Palace was unusually quiet.
Damon studied me from head to toe, only relaxing when he confirmed I was unharmed.
“Thank God,” he exhaled. “Looks like Alexandra didn’t have time to make a move on you.”
I gave a faint smile.
“My luck’s never been great. The only reason she didn’t is because I hit a nerve.”
Ever since their marriage, Alexandra had kept close tabs on everything Colton did-who he spoke to, who he
complimented, even who he simply looked at.
She spent every day trying to eliminate every woman within his orbit. But not only did her efforts fail, they made Colton
more and more distant. Even disgusted.
What was the point?
She was a princess. If she wanted a man, she could have simply claimed him.
The reason Colton kept flirting with others was because he still had freedom, power, and a restless heart.
But if you stripped away his power, locked down his freedom, and suffocated that heart-
Then maybe all her problems would disappear.
Fear lasts longer than love.
That’s what I told Alexandra. And her eyes lit up.
If she truly took my words to heart, then I’d be safe-because from that moment on, I would no longer be the enemy.
“You hate him?” Damon asked.
“Hate?” I repeated quietly. “No. He protected me for two years. I don’t hate him. But I want to live.”
With someone like Alexandra, it was only a matter of time before she tired of cutting down the women and turned her attention to the man himself.
That day was always going to come.
I had simply brought it forward, for my own survival.
I didn’t owe Colton anything anymore.
Meanwhile, Damon had hired a sketch artist to recreate the face of the woman who once owned that jade pendant. When the image was complete, it was clear-she looked nothing like my sister-in-law. Too young. Too different.
I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.

Damon noticed.
“I’ve assigned more people to search the city,” he said. “If your sister-in-law’s still here, we’ll find her. Th together.”
And just like that, I owed him even more.
Maybe sensing my guilt, Damon turned to me and said,
“I help you find your sister-in-law… but I’d like a favor in return.”
