Chapter 148
Thayer’s hand, gripping the agreement, had turned pale. His eyes seemed frozen in their sockets. A long while passed before he finally heard his own voice, heavy beyond belief.”
“I will sign the contract and divorce Althea. From now on, the only woman who will be my wife…”
Aveline looked at him with hope in her eyes. But Thayer couldn’t help glancing toward me, who had remained silent all this time.
“Will be Aveline and no one else.“>
He thought he would see sadness or heartbreak on my face, but there was none. Instead, there was only a look of relief and joy.”
I exchanged a smile with Lucien beside me. We had already agreed to collect my divorce certificate next Monday. I didn’t hesitate for even a second before turning and leaving with Lucien.
Thayer couldn’t help but lift his foot to chase after me, but was stopped by Aveline, who clung to his waist, wiping away tears. Her voice trembled with gratitude.
“Thayer… thank you. Thank you for giving me and the baby dignity. From now on, it’ll just be you and us…”
It was the kind of absolute dependence he once cherished most, but Thayer felt no joy whatsoever. His gaze stayed locked on me who never pretended, who never wore a mask.
He watched me walk farther and farther away from him.
His throat felt dry and sore, tinged with the taste of blood. At last, he couldn’t hold back and shouted, “Althea!”
But no sound came out, not a single word. Even Aveline, still holding him tightly, didn’t hear anything. She looked at him in confusion. “Thayer… what did you say?“}
Thayér opened his mouth again, but not a sound escaped.
It hit him all at once. He had no way left to make me stay. All he could do was watch as I walked away, getting farther and farther out of reach.
The middle–aged couple looked around the room with satisfaction, already acting as if it were their own home. They strolled about casually, even helping themselves to quite a few things without the slightest hesitation.
Then, with an air of smugness, they sat down on the sofa, their faces full of worldly calculation. “Alright, Thayer, stop staring. Let’s talk about the bride price.”}
“Our daughter is getting married for the first time and you’re a divorcé. The bride price should be at least seven million dollars, plus ten percent of the Alcott Family’s shares.“}
Harvant’s expression turned cold instantly. He had never had much affection for the woman beside his son, who only ever knew how to cry. He was only willing to let his son marry her because the boy liked her.
N
But now that her parents had made a scene in their home and were demanding such an outrageous sum for the marriage. Did they really think everyone in the Alcott Family was a fool?
But before he could speak, the bejeweled woman blew on her nails, her voice laced with veiled sarcasm. “So you were willing to give that maid’s daughter so much property, but not your own bride? Fine then. Aveline, go get an abortion right now. Women of the Dorne Family are not that cheap!“>
Her sharp nails were like blades, tearing Aveline out of Thayer’s arms. Aveline’s şobs grew louder, the noise pounding in Thayer’s head like a relentless drum.
“Enough. It’s not that the Alcott Family can’t afford it. Once I’ve gotten the divorce certificate with Althea, you can have whatever you want.”
Seeing that his son had agreed, Harvant said nothing more. Instead, he stared thoughtfully at the woman across from him.
But the woman before him now was bloated and unrecognizable–nothing like the person from back then.
Harvant withdrew his scrutinizing gaze, lifted his foot and headed upstairs, choosing not to involve himself in the argument downstairs any further.”
Satisfied with the outcome, the two middle–aged visitors helped themselves to several antique vases from the Alcott Family before leaving with smug expressions.
A storm of emotions churned in Thayer’s heart, but when his eyes met Aveline’s, an inexplicable surge of anger suddenly flared up within him. He even had the wild urge to throw her down then and there, regardless of the occasion.
But deep down, he was certain–he didn’t actually have any such desire.N
A suspicion surfaced in his mind and with that, he no longer had any intention of staying at home.
