Yet even so, Thayer showed no intention of getting up to apologize–until the woman by the door suddenly clutched her belly and collapsed to the floor, groaning in pain.

He froze mid–step, then carefully carried her to the sofa, gently placing his hand on her belly to feel the strong, vigorous movements from
within.
But in that moment, his mind drifted back to that night in my room, when he had felt a faint movement. It was so subtle, almost nonexistent.
It was his and my child.
Of course, he knew why that child had turned out so weak. It was because in my early pregnancy, he had poured cold water on me, forced me to kneel on broken glass, even pushed me to the ground while I was carrying his child–and worst of all, left me behind in a house during an earthquake.

Thayer stared at his calm, composed father, then suddenly broke into a twisted smile.}
“Dad, you couldn’t even keep your own wife and she ran off. I’m not a coward like you, hiding in a temple meditating. If you think I’ll just sit back and divorce her, you can…”
