Chapter 6
Collins didn’t answer right away. Instead,he cast a deep, unreadable glance at me.
My heart jolted and I even forgot to breathe.I braced myself, thinking he would tease me more before giving a straight answer. However, instead, he said simply, “The doctor handled it.Nothing serious. The medicine is a bit weak. Just tough it out and you’ll be fine.”
My fingers trembled and the color drained from my face in a flash. The medicine was a bit weak. Just tough it out and you’ll be fine.”
So, why Nathan could not tough it out three years ago? Why did he end up with Alicia under the influence of that same drug? Was it really…just that he couldn’t control himself?
I stared at Collins,my voice trembling as I asked,” So back then…Nathan, was he….”
Though Collins did not say it,he just raised an eyebrow, gave me a look and smirked. Yet, then one looks sad more than a thousand words.
It did not matter. We’re divorced now. Whatever he did back then…had nothing to do with me anymore.
Still,at that moment,it felt like my heart sank to the bottom of the ocean and would never rise again.
“Okay,“Collins interrupted.“Stop talking about other men in front of me…I get jealous.”
His sudden low voice, smile and the teasing but serious way he looked at me put me in a daze for a moment. Suddenly, the pain that wrapped around my heart loosened.
Even though he understood my mind,he did not say it or judge me. Then Collins changed the subject.“You’re not in good shape to be walking around.Let the doctor finish the exam before you think about going home. Do you want to let your parents know where you are?”
I tried moving my fingers and only then realized how weak I still was.
“No need, “I said while shaking my head,my gaze dim.My mom passed away from cancer a few years ago. Even on her deathbed, she told me not to let life wear me down.
However, after she died,my dad turned into a completely different person. He started bringing different women home every other week and said,“Life is short,I might as well enjoy it.”
He cycled women every two years and every time called them his“true love“.
Unless I had no other option,I didn’t want to step foot under that roof again.Let alone explain anything.
Since I hastily left the Campbell Family,my destination became a problem. All I could do…was to stay with Collins.
“You trust me that much? Aren’t you afraid I’ll try something on you?“The tease came out of nowhere.Collins braced one of his hands on the side of my bed as he leaned in a little closer. His gaze swept over my face, laced with playfulness.
My ears abruptly reddened and my heart jolted nervously, but I braced myself to put on a calm manner.“You won’t… You’re a good person.”
“Tsk.“He clicked his tongue softly as he saw through me. His brow arched as he leaned even closer.“That’s where you’re wrong.”
4:25 pm DDDD
Before I could respond, Collins suddenly flicked me on the forehead.“I’m not a nice guy.“He straightened his body.”Relax. You’re about to tear the blanket in half.”
Only then did I realize how tightly I gripped the covers that my knuckles went white.I quickly loosened my hold with a burning face.
He headed toward the living room.“The doctor will be here soon to do a full check–up.”
“…Thank you,“I murmured.
Collins did not turn around, only raised his hand and waved as his voice drifted back,“Don’t forget to get a thank–you gift.I don’t do good deeds for free.”
In a daze,I looked at his vanishing tall figure for a while.
Back then, when I was with Nathan,I’d heard a lot about it.People said he was difficult to deal with, dangerous and rebellious. He was Nathan’s most dangerous rival. Others said,he was a loose cannon, ruthless and only cared about profit and not care about feeling.
Yet,he took me when I was at the darkest moment. He wrapped me in his arms,no questions asked and simply said,”I’ll just pretend you were scared.”
