Collins and I were practicing a new dessert recipe when he gently tapped my hand. “Someone’s here to see you.”
I walked to the front door and saw him.
Nathan was still tall and handsome as ever, but his aura had changed completely. The light in his eyes had dimmed a lot.
His hand shook the moment he gave me the box of relics.I faintly said,”Thank you.”
Just as I turned to leave,he suddenly whispered,”Your ring… It’s beautiful.”
paused for a moment and lowered my eyes to look at the ring adorned with crushed diamonds.
Collins had given it to me the night before the opening.He had knelt on one knee and said, “We don’t have to rush into marriage,but I want to make a promise to you.”

Now,I faced Nathan,still smiling,except there was no emotion in that smile,“Thanks,I think it
ooks nice too.”
Nathan gritted his teeth,his voice a little hoarse,” Was it from him?”
nodded.
You’re happy…aren’t you?”
nstead of answering,I smiled and turned around.“You sent the relics,so goodbye.”
He watched me disappear through the door,with bloodshot eyes.
He crouched down, as if his whole body had been drained of its soul and holding his head,he nuttered,”Laurie,l really miss you.”
No one would hear that simple“I miss you“again.
At the family residence,the old matriarch sat in her usual seat,her silver hair pinned perfectly in ›lace.“The family can’t afford to have more delays,” she said sternly.“You need to conside narriage.Laurie is gone. The past is over. Now that you have a child,it’s time to think about a proper match.”
Nathan looked up abruptly.“I said I won’t marry anyone else.”
The old madam wrinkled her brow. Her voice turned ice cold in a flash,“You can’t be selfish anymore. You still have responsibilities to the family. You can’t gamble the entire Campbell Family’s future on a woman who doesn’t belong to you anymore.”
I already have an heir.”Nathan’s tone was extremely low,but his words were clear.
The old woman scoffed.“One child isn’t enough. Do you know what people are saying? That the crown prince of the Campbell Family can’t even keep a wife and has to feed his baby himself!”
Nathan stood up and walked to the old madam without a word.
Then, before everyone,he dropped to his knees. His back was straight with rigid resolution.
The old lady snapped, “What are you doing?”
Nathan gritted his teeth and said with a deep and hoarse voice,” Grandma,I beg you to stop

He took a deep breath,then continued, “One child is enough. He will inherit the Campbell Family. He will inherit everything I have. Marrying anyone else who isn’t Laurie…would just be an insult to her memory.”
He lowered his head,his eyes reddened,“I’ll do anything else you ask,but please let me not marry again.Let me raise my child,protect the Campbell Family’s name and protect the last shred of my dignity.”
The old woman stood up with the help of her cane and was ready to rebuke him. However,when she saw his straight–kneeling back,she suddenly felt old and tired.
The living room fell into a deathly silence. No one dared to speak.
Finally,she asked him,“You still can’t let her go?”
His voice cracked as he murmured,“No.”
Only he knew how much he missed me and yet he could not come and see me.
He was afraid that if he disturbed me again,he would really have nothing left.
He was afraid that the girl who used to shine in his world would not even give him the last ounce of mercy.
So,he could only watch from afar.
Watching that girl,smiling as she opened her store,smiling as she fell in love,smiling as she regained her life.
He finally understood that I didn’t need him anymore for my happiness.
