I went to see a lawyer friend by myself to arrange the divorce.
She froze as she stared at me for a few seconds.“Are you positive? Does he even know about
this?”
I nodded.“Whether he knows or not doesn’t matter. I’ve made up my mind.”
At first,my friend was reluctant,but finally agreed to help me with this.
I did not know how I managed to keep it together as I went home,since waves of pressure pushed my heart.
Before I even got home,the world spun,everything went black and I collapsed.
When I woke up,I was alone in the hospital room.
I had a heart condition and every time I had an attack, Nathan was always by my side.However,now,he was probably busy taking care of the kids and couldn’t be with me.
Since the family signatures were needed to be discharged from the hospital,l called Nathan.However,the moment the call connected, he exploded, “Laurie!I’ve investigated everything You slapped Alice and pinched the child. When did you become so cruel?”
“I didn’t do it!“My nose stung with tears. It was the first time he spoke to me like this and he was accusing me wrongly.
“Stop lying to me!“His voice changed because of his anger.
“The child is about to be added to the family registry! Can you stop causing trouble? I’ve told you,Alicia won’t affect your standing!”
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to stop myself from having another attack.
“Next Sunday,you have to be present at the child’s family registration ceremony,“Nathan snapped and ended the call decisively.
I stared at the ceiling and let out a small smile.
On Sunday,the ceremony venue was so lavishly decorated. Guests and relatives came in
nonstop.
All the relatives looked at me with sympathetic eyes.
Nathan came over,his voice low,“After today, I’ll send Alicia abroad. The kids will be registerec under your name. Laurie,we can return to the way we were.”
As Nathan’s eyes were on me with a very low voice,he whispered, “You know, I’ve always been worried about you getting hurt. This baby came at just the right time,so we won’t pressure ourselves to have kids.”
My heart disease made the pregnancy high–risk.Nathan had always been afraid I would be in danger,so he was hesitant to let me have a child.
I held back the nausea rising in my throat and replied quietly,“Just because I’m afraid to have a child doesn’t mean I’m going to accept your child with another woman.”
Nathan looked stunned,but when he was about to explain something,he was called away by the matriarch.
4:23 pm DDDD.
I stood there alone when the nanny suddenly ran over,pale–faced. “My stomach hurts sc badly,ma’am,please hold the baby for me…”
I reached out instinctively and the soft body of the child settled into my arms. When I was to hold him firmly,suddenly, he started to thrash violently. His skin flushed red and his crying was sharp and piercing.
“What’s happening?!”
“The baby’s breaking out in a rash!”
“Quick,call the doctor!”
Chaos erupted.
My mind went blank. Before I could react,Alicia rushed over and dropped to her knees in front of me as tears streamed down her face.
“I’m sorry,ma’am,it’s all my fault.I won’t ask for the baby to be added to the Campbell Family registry.Please,just spare the child!”
“What are you talking about?“My eyes went cold.
She lifted her face and said with a trembled voice,” The child can’t eat nuts,he’s allergic to them and yet,just now,I saw you giving him nuts to lick.”
Gasps erupted in the crowd.
“I never fed him anything!“My voice shook a bit,but no one cared. Despite trying to stop her, Alice bowed to me.
“I’ll leave.I’ll never show myself to you again. Please,just don’t hurt my child…”
Her act was perfect, whether her tears,voice,or posture. She put herself in the lowest position.
Smack!
A sudden slap hit my face and snapped my head to the side,then my vision went black. The matriarch, Old Madam Campbell’s arrogant face was filled with disgust,“Laurissa Smith,you are really vicious to the bone!Our Campbell Family doesn’t deserve a daughter–in–law like you!”
