The door burst open,then Nathan ran in,shoved me aside,scooped the baby into his arms and asked, “What happened?”
Tears welled in Alicia’s eyes as she sobbed,“Mr. Campbell, I’m sorry. The baby was probably scared of me and refused to stop crying.”
She didn’t say I hit her,but showed Nathan her injured face plainly.
I instinctively took a step back and,with my own eyes,I looked at the noticeable flicker of distress that passed through Nathan’s eyes. Then,his gaze turned cold as it landed on me.
That look said it all,that he chose to believe Alicia without any qualms.
I felt as if my heart was being crushed so hard that it was so painful that it was going to break.
His voice was extremely cold.“Laurie,if you truly can’t tolerate this mother, you should stay at the villa in Caston City for the time being
I just turned around and left without realizing that I was wounded and had shed blood.
Back home,l only collected a few clothes and got them into my suitcase,but my fingers trembled so badly I couldn’t even zip it up.
I clutched my chest and panted for breath as memories wrapped around my head like a net.
From college to marriage,Nathan and I had been in love.
Although he was a cold and resolute person,he spoiled me like a flower in a greenhouse. The day we registered our marriage,he held my hands and looked me in the eye.“Laurissa Smith,from this day forward,there will only be you in my life.”
I never thought our relationship would go sour, that was up to that day when he was drugged at a drinking game and sent a reckless night with his secretary,Alicia.
The first thing he did was call me,as fear colored his usually calm voice,” Laurie,this was truly an accident this time. I’ll send her away. Please don’t abandon me.”
Though my heart shattered,I decided to forgive him.
However,before long,Alicia came back again.
During a business trip,Nathan was kidnapped. While she was eight months pregnant, Alicia risked herself to be an informant for the police and contacted the kidnapper alone. She was dragged for ten miles and because of it,she nearly got miscarried.
Alicia said,“Please,Mr. Campbell. This’s the only child I’ll have. Please,don’t make me terminate this child.”
Since he owed her his life,Nathan couldn’t just send her away silently,so he knelt in front of me all night and begged me, “I’m so sorry,Laurie. Please forgive me.”
I gave him a choice coldly,” Nathan,either you divorce me or she gets rid of the baby.”
His eyes were bloodshot as he clutched my hand.“We’re not getting divorced. However, I have to repay her for saving me.”
So I moved back to my parents’place and stayed alone for a month.
Then the matriarch,Old Madam Campbell,called and told me to return. She said the baby needed

to be added to the family registry and I,as Mrs. Campbell,had to be there.
After much thought,I sent Nathan a message.[Let’s get divorced.]
It was a sentence I should have said long ago.However,now that I had said it,I felt calmer than expected.
Moments later, Nathan called.I didn’t answer. Ten minutes later, he ran home. He was sweating and breathless.
“Laurie,are you upset with me again?I won’t agree to a divorce. After the child’s matters are settled, we’ll talk,okay?” he said
“I’m not angry,“I said,exhausted.“I just don’t want to do this anymore.”
“Why should we get divorced over someone who doesn’t matter?“Nathan asked, but when he was about to say something else,the cell phone in his pocket suddenly rang.
Automatically,Nathan pushed the answer button and Alicia’s anxious cries sounded from the phone,“Mr.Campbell,the baby got scared earlier…and has been burning up to thirty–nine point five degrees Celsius. I’m so afraid.”
I witnessed how his face froze in a flash as conflict and guilt filled his eyes.
“Just leave,” said softly, “You’re the father.”
I watched him throw on a coat hurriedly and rush to leave.I felt as if my chest was being sliced open and blood flew from the wound.
That was the’unimportant’person he claimed to be.
There was a time when I wondered if he would be a good father if we had children. Too bad,nothing left now.
Without realizing it,my tears fell as I was nearly breaking down.
