Chapter 9

Evelyn stood there in shock.

In that moment, she didn’t know if she was more angry or sadder.

She only heard her own cold questioning, “Do you have to protect her like this?”

In an instant, the conference room became terrifyingly silent.

Martin felt the various gazes of the directors and glanced deeply at Evelyn. Finally, he coldly said, “Your bank statement

shows that you transferred 500,000 dollars to your family a year ago. Where did this money come from?”

This sentence hit Evelyn like a sledgehammer.

He didn’t even have this much trust in her.

She tightly clenched her hands and asked, word by word, “The money was saved by me, do you believe it?”

Martin remained silent.

This silence, like a knife, cut away Evelyn’s heart, along with the flesh and blood. His distrustful gaze made it difficult for

Evelyn to maintain her always upright spine.

Her lips trembled, and she had to tightly clench her hands to prevent the tears from falling at that moment.

After a long while, Evelyn took a deep breath and stood up, scanning the people in the boardroom before resigning

herself.

“I accepted this decision.”

She never looked at Martin again and walked straight out of the door.

Facing numerous surprised or disdainful gazes, Evelyn walked to her workstation and began to tidy up her belongings.

Jenny rushed over, clearly having received the news, and cautiously asked, “Evelyn, are you okay?”

Evelyn shook her head slowly and said nothing.

She was like a defeated dog, scurrying away in a disheveled and dejected manner.

For a moment, I didn’t know where to go.

I returned home in a daze, only to find my mother standing at the door, muttering and grumbling.

As soon as Evelyn’s mother saw Evelyn, her eyes lit up and she immediately rushed forward, saying, “Evelyn, Martin only

paid half of the money, I asked him for it, but that fox spirit always answers the phone and she even blocked me!”

It was money again.

Since she became an adult, her mother seemed to have never spoken another word to her except for asking for money.

Evelyn, with a pale face and no hope, still asked, “Mom, besides money, is there nothing else you want to tell me?”

Evelyn’s mother rolled her eyes in disbelief and said, “What are you saying! You useless person, your brother’s house is waiting for the final payment! Since Martin won’t give it, you should make up for it for your brother!”

Evelyn’s heart turned completely cold, “I will not give you a single penny anymore.”

“A year ago, we had already settled the 500,000-dollar debts between us.”

As soon as these words were spoken, it completely ignited the flames of war.

“I am your mother! How dare you speak to me like this!” Evelyn’s mother’s expression instantly changed, and she aggressively snatched Evelyn’s bag.

Evelyn was taken aback and instinctively pulled back.

She was knocked down to the ground by a forceful thrust.

I had severe cramping in my lower abdomen, as if something had flowed down.

She was in so much pain that she broke out in a cold sweat, “Mom… call an ambulance, please.”

What I saw was the fleeing figure of my mother, even running ahead and not forgetting to pick up her bag.

Evelyn raised her hand and tremblingly put it down.

In an instant, whether it was physiological or psychological, an endless sense of pain surged up, and there were waves of darkness in front of the eyes.

Evelyn crawled towards the phone, enduring the pain.

Blood stains trailed along the crawling, leaving behind a vivid and glaring path of red.

“Beep Beep Beep Beep~”

The sound of an ambulance echoed over the neighborhood.

When Evelyn was taken to the hospital, she was in so much pain that she couldn’t open her eyes.

“Have you contacted the patient’s family? The patient’s condition is critical and we need to perform the surgery

immediately.”

“Doctor, the patient’s mother’s phone was not reachable.”

“She hit her husband.”

After a while, the anxious voice of the nurse came, “Her husband’s phone was not answered, and he didn’t reply to the

messages. What should we do, doctor?”

Evelyn, with a nasal cannula inserted in her nose, trembled as she reached out her hand and said, “Give it to me.”

She felt waves of darkness in front of her eyes, so she decided to close her eyes and wait.

The phone rang again and again, but no one answered.

She numbly persisted in hitting over and over again.

Finally, it was connected.

Evelyn tried her best to speak, but on the other end of the phone, Martin’s voice came coldly, “Still busy.”

The next second, the phone hung up.
