Chapter 4
After receiving a positive response, I finally exhaled in relief.
The next morning, I began packing my bags.
In a fit of spite, Kelly had haphazardly thrown my things into the storage
room.
There wasn’t much of worth, but when I glanced at the toys I had crafted for Owen before he was born, I paused.
As I sighed, a sudden pain pierced my back.
Owen stood at the doorway, proudly gesturing toward the stone on the ground.
“Got you, thief! I’ve heard you rummaging around since this morning. Return what you’ve taken immediately, or next time it won’t just be a stone hitting you.”
Ignoring his command, I responded calmly, “These belongings are mine.”
“You’re lying!” Owen, furious at my response, charged in like an enraged bull.
He smashed the items before me without hesitation, and the flying plastic shards cut into my face.
Owen taunted me, gesturing at the injury on my face. “Nothing here is yours. Everything in this house belongs to my mom, Kelly. She’s the true lady of this home! You thief, leave now!”
I looked at the shattered pieces on the floor. After a moment of silence, I

just smiled and replied, “If that’s what you want.”

Turning around, I saw David standing nearby, empty–handed. “David, I’m leaving. Let’s get a divorce,” I said calmly.
The room fell into silence.
David’s expression changed, and he instinctively took hold of my hand. “Where are you going?”
Kelly looked both surprised and pretended to understand. “Celine, did you have an argument with Owen? He’s just a child. How can you, as his mother, leave him like this?”
Upon hearing this, David let go of my hand, his eyes filled with
disappointment. “Celine, how many times must I remind you? Owen is so young, yet you keep arguing with him. Do you even deserve to be a mother?”
In the past, I might have tried to express my feelings about Owen.
But now, I simply gave a small smile and asked, “David, did you ever let me be a mother?”
David was caught off guard and then retorted irritably, “Celine, you have no family or home. Where else can you go but stay here? Out of respect for our former marriage, I’m offering you a place. Why are you making such a big deal?”
In David’s mind, I should have been thanking him, eager to take care of Kelly, and ready to cook her spaghetti whenever she wanted. However, I no longer wished to be his compliant servant, at his beck and call.
“Thank you, Mr. Kilbreth. However, I no longer need it.”
Tears filled Kelly’s eyes as she spoke with a pitiful tone, “Celine, I understand you don’t like me. You resent that I married David and took

your place, and you don’t want me to be Owen’s guardian. But at that time, we had no choice. David was so reckless with money. How could he have raised Owen properly?
“Now that you’ve returned, it’s time for me to step aside. I only hope that, as former best friends, you can forgive me.”
With those words, she bowed deeply to me.
David gently helped her up, his expression growing serious. “Kelly, there’s no need to apologize to her. After everything you’ve done raising Owen, you’re already the true lady of the Kilbreth family in my eyes. Let’s see anyone try to make you leave!”
With a brief glance at me, he wrapped his arm around her waist and kissed her, ignoring everyone around.
Owen rushed over, covering his eyes with a playful grin and saying, “Mom and dad, you’re embarrassing.”
He then shot me a challenging look. “See how much my parents adore each other? Why don’t you just go away? You have no decency. I won’t let you mess up their relationship!”
offered them a silent smile and turned to go.
David’s expression tightened, and he clenched his jaw. “Celine, you’ll regret this.”
Kelly cried, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Celine, I didn’t mean to push you away. I should be the one to leave.”
Though her words were always empathetic, her eyes betrayed a sense of victory and contentment.
I looked down, determined and unwavering.
