Chapter 6
Seeing my brother arrive, my heart instantly settled. Thank goodness—he really
came.
Tyler’s father was the first to react. He hurried forward with a forced smile. “Mr. Brooks, if only you’d let us know you were coming!”
At that moment, he hadn’t yet understood the meaning behind Xavier’s words. After all, Xavier was the current head of the Brooks family, a man whose word was law throughout Manhattan. Tyler’s father couldn’t possibly connect an orphan who had married into his family for years with someone like Xavier.
Xavier ignored him and strode to my side. His eyes were full of concern. From what he had just heard, he could guess what kind of life I had endured all these years. “Wendy, don’t be afraid. Your brother is here.”
Because of those words-“don’t be afraid, your brother is here“-a warm current
flowed through my heart. I nodded firmly. “Xavier, with you here, I’m not afraid.”
The feeling of having someone stand up for me was wonderful.
As soon as Tyler saw Xavier, he stood up, his gaze hostile. After all, he had been beaten just days ago. “It’s you!”
After that day, he had tried to investigate Xavier but couldn’t find any useful
information.
He hadn’t expected Xavier to deliver himself to their doorstep today! Tyler clenched his fists. In all his life, no one had ever dared to lay hands on him. Today,
he would make this man crawl out!
Tyler’s father sensed something wrong in his son’s tone. He quickly approached and tentatively asked, “Mr. Brooks, is there some misunderstanding between you and my son?”
Seeing his father’s eager attitude, Tyler had an ominous feeling.
Xavier stood in front of me protectively, his tone unfriendly. “Misunderstanding? I
don’t think so.”
Before Tyler’s father could say anything more, Xavier’s gaze fell on Tyler’s mother. “Your family is really something–even my sister, Xavier Brooks’s sister, has to

to your ‘lessons‘? Why don’t you try teaching me a thing or two?” Instantly, everyone’s eyes widened.
Xavier’s sister…
Wasn’t that the missing Brooks family daughter? Everyone knew how many years Mrs. Brooks had searched for her daughter. With their guilt and love for their daughter, if they learned of the mistreatment Wendy had suffered in this household, they might destroy them entirely.
How could it be… Wendy?
The terrible premonition made Tyler’s father’s forehead break out in sweat. He
trembled with fear and fell to his knees.
This was the Brooks family–one of Manhattan’s oldest families. Would they even
survive this?
“Mr. Brooks, we… we didn’t know Wendy was the Brooks family’s lost daughter! Since Wendy married into our family, we’re all one family now. Please be merciful. I swear we’ll take good care of Wendy from now on. We won’t let her suffer any grievances!”
Tyler’s father was almost crying. His voice was submissive and trembling with fear. Even Tyler unconsciously grew tense. He had never imagined I would have such a powerful identity–to be the Brooks family’s lost daughter.
He had not only misunderstood me but… had hurt me so deeply.
Xavier gave a cold laugh, one that was terrifying enough to make everyone
shudder. “One family? That’s not what I heard when I arrived.”
Tyler’s family certainly knew about my accident, but not one of them had come to see me. They even blamed me for not protecting the baby in my womb, lamenting the loss of their first grandson.
They were selfish and self–centered–the most disgusting people.
“Would you rather lose a son, or sign these papers?” As he finished speaking, someone brought forward divorce papers.
“Wendy, babe, I was wrong! I misunderstood you. You can hit me, scold me, but

please don’t divorce me. We were so in love. If you don’t like Sophia, I’ll send her away immediately.”
“Babe, I truly know I was wrong. Please forgive me this once? I promise I’ll love you
properly from now on…”

Hearing his apologies, my heart felt nothing. He hadn’t suddenly realized he loved
- me. He was begging because he knew what awaited him otherwise.
I avoided his outstretched hand. “Tyler, you disgust me.”
“From the moment you locked me in the house for Sophia’s sake, we were
finished.”
“I nearly died from hemorrhaging on the operating table. You thought I was lying, and without distinguishing right from wrong, you accused me of cheating. That
was all you.”
Each of my words made Tyler’s expression more pained. He sat on the floor,
terrified, unable to say a word.
How could he forget? Our child was killed by his own hand.
His pleas now were only because he feared Xavier would destroy his family.
After saying the last word, I turned to Xavier. “Xavier, let’s go.”
Tyler would definitely sign the papers–after all, he valued his life.
Sitting in the car, I couldn’t stop my tears from falling–for my unborn child, and for all the years of suffering I had endured.
Xavier gently wiped away my tears, as if handling the world’s most precious treasure. Then, over and over again, he told me, “Don’t be afraid. Your brother is
here.”
