On the day I hit eight months pregnant, my husband Tyler, who was supposed to take me to my prenatal appointment, suddenly disappeared.
He finally returned home late that night looking exhausted. That’s when I learned he’d been at the hospital with his ex–girlfriend.
The first words out of his mouth were, “Sophia has stomach cancer. She doesn’t
have much time left. Her greatest wish is to marry me and have a wedding
ceremony.”
Tyler’s face was filled with pain and struggle as he looked at me pleadingly. “Please take pity on her. Don’t worry, we’ll just get a temporary divorce. Once Sophia passes away without regrets, we’ll remarry immediately. I promise to give you an even more spectacular wedding.”
I stared at Tyler in disbelief, unable to understand how he could say such things. He knew perfectly well I’d been waiting three years for our wedding! Not to mention I was carrying his child!
In our three years of marriage, Tyler and I never had a proper wedding because he was always “too busy with work.”
Even our courthouse ceremony was rushed–we didn’t even have time for a celebration dinner before he hurried off on a business trip.
But Tyler had always treated me well, almost always doing whatever I asked, so I consoled myself that his love was enough.
When I learned about his high school sweetheart, I unconditionally believed him
when he said it was ancient history.
Now, after spending over six months planning our wedding, personally selecting and supervising every detail, just waiting to recover after giving birth, he wanted me to give up our wedding to him and his ex.
I trembled with anger.
Only now did I understand–it wasn’t that he was busy; it was that I wasn’t the one
who mattered to him.
“That’s impossible. I don’t agree, Tyler. Have you even thought about me…” I

clutched my belly, but before I could finish, he cut me off.
Tyler stood up, his face livid. His voice turned ice–cold. “Wendy, how can you be so heartless? It’s just a wedding. I told you we can have another one later. She’s dying -what could she possibly take from you?”
Were they really just friends? Looking at Tyler’s fury, my heart stabbed with pain, and my stomach began to ache. My face paled. “Tyler, my stomach hurts. Please take me to the hospital…”
But Tyler didn’t believe me. He looked down at me, his voice filled with rage. “When did you become so vicious? Using our baby to fake illness! I already told you Sophia and I are just friends and I’m only doing this out of compassion. Why are you being so unreasonable?”
With that, he grabbed his jacket and headed for the door.
I tried to follow him but he pushed me away roughly. He even took my phone, his tone threatening.
“I’m going to the hospital to be with Sophia. Stay home and think about your behavior! And don’t even think about complaining to my parents!”
The door slammed shut with such force it startled me. I rushed to open it only to discover he had locked it from the outside.
The pain in my abdomen filled me with panic. I kept banging on the door, calling Tyler’s name, hoping it was just a cruel joke.
But the next moment, I heard his car engine start and drive away from our yard. He had really gone, leaving me locked alone in the house.
He was so confident because he knew I was an orphan with no friends in this city- I had only him to rely on.
I clutched my stomach as large beads of sweat rolled down my face, silently praying for the baby to stay strong.
The door was locked from outside, Tyler had taken my phone, and our house was a detached villa in the suburbs.
My caregiver had recently taken leave to handle family matters and wouldn’t

But my baby couldn’t wait that long. I desperately banged on the door, praying a passing neighbor would hear my cries for help as suffocating pain enveloped me. A feeling of wetness spread down my thighs. I realized my water had broken early. Endless fear dragged me into an abyss as my vision began to blur.
