Chapter 4
Vivian suddenly clutched her belly, pointing at the urn I had placed beside the bed.
“I’m allergic to dust! Why did you bring lime powder into the house?!”
She faked a cough, panic in her voice.
“Damien–help me!”
“No!” I lunged forward, eyes wide.
But it was too late. Vivian kicked the urn.
My mother’s ashes spilled across the floor.
The rage inside me erupted.
I pounced on her, grabbed her hair, my vision blazing red.
“You did it on purpose, didn’t you?!”
“You filthy bitch! Wasn’t it enough your mom seduced my dad? Now you’re coming after my
husband too?!”
Vivian screamed.
“She’s crazy! Damien, help! She’s trying to kill me!”
I squeezed her throat with everything I had–until Damien kicked me across the room.
I hit the floor hard, blood pooling beneath me.
Dragging myself forward, I tried to gather Mom’s ashes, leaving a trail of crimson behind me.
Tears dripped onto the powder.
“I’m sorry, Mom… I’m so sorry…”
Suddenly, Damien stormed over and ripped the urn from my arms.
Without a word, he dumped it into the toilet.
Whoosh!

The flush roared like thunder in my ears.
I knelt, frozen, staring at the swirling water.
When I looked up, my eyes were blazing red.
“Damien Lancaster, I will per 2
you.‘
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes–shock, maybe guilt–but it was gone in a second.
Vivian clutched her torn–out hair, sobbing.
“Damien, look! She ripped out so much! I don’t want to have your baby anymore… I’ll look ugly!”
Damien cradled her like porcelain.
“You won’t. You’re the most beautiful girl in the world. You’ll never be ugly.”
Then his gaze landed on me–like I was dirt.
“To the maid,” he ordered. “Bring me the scissors.”
He grabbed my chin and forced me to look
- up.
“I’ve been too soft on you, Jasmine.”
With that, he began snipping.
Blade after blade, he cut off my hair like he was trimming weeds.
The day before our wedding, he held that same hair like a treasure.
Said it was his favorite part of me.
Now it fell around me like dead leaves.
When only tufts were left, he tossed the scissors aside.
Then turned to Vivian and kissed hissors aside.
“Still think you’ll look ugly?”
hair gently.
Vivian laughed through her tears and looked at me triumphantly.
“Sis looks like a clown now.”

I stared blankly ahead, then let out a broken laugh, tears falling again.
“You’ll regret this,” I whispered, voice like ice.
Damien didn’t even look up.
“Tomorrow’s Vivian’s birthday,” he said, dabbing ointment on her. “Seems like I’ll need to keep
you on a leash if you won’t behave.”
The maid fastened a dog chain around my neck.
She hesitated when she saw the blood between my legs.
“Sir,” she whispered, “I think… she’s bleeding.”
