Chapter 9
Sadie was standing just outside the door. She heard the loud argument coming from the guest bedroom and immediately felt something was
wrong.
Then, after a short while, Petra rolled out in her wheelchair, her face dark
and stormy.
“Mrs. Upton, last time you mentioned the flowers you liked, so I asked the butler…”
Sadie started softly with a forced smile but was cut off by a sharp glare
from Petra.
“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to, you liar.
“You’re not carrying my grandson, yet you’re pretending and spinning lies to fool me. Just because you’ve wormed your way into my family doesn’t mean I don’t see through you. Don’t forget, I’m a woman. Men might fall for your tricks, but I see right through them!”
Petra’s brow furrowed with anger, furious at how she had been played for the sake of her grandson.
“Three years ago, you took advantage of my family when we were weak and trampled all over us. Now that my son’s doing well, you suddenly act all sweet? Get out! My family doesn’t support trash like you!”
The shouting outside grew louder. Jim wanted to step out to stop it, but his mother gave him a cold look.
“Son, don’t waste your time on this liar. If you side with her, maybe you should ask what she did to drive Hayley away.”

Sadie’s expression froze.
“Mrs. Upton, what do you mean? I didn’t try to drive Ms. Bronson away. Didn’t you chase her off?”
Petra sneered, full of contempt.
“Really? Then who was it that openly or secretly asked for my support? Who left Hayley sick and miserable, without even a blanket?
“Sadie, remember, the only reason I’m putting up with you is because I thought you were carrying our offspring.
“Or are you trying to say that you did not want to push Hayley out? After she got out of the ice cellar, she didn’t even have a blanket in the utility room. That wasn’t you, right? It wasn’t you making things hard for her at work, forcing her to serve you and protect your pregnancy, right?”
Petra stopped and glanced over at Jim, who was standing nearby with a
serious look.
Jim fell silent for once.
Sadie was stunned, tears quickly filling her eyes.
“Jim, I didn’t do any of that. Please don’t believe her.“.
Jim remained silent.
Looking at him, Sadie–crying for more than ten minutes now–knew exactly what he was thinking without a word.
Following Petra’s command, the servant quickly switched sides and dragged Sadie out without any mercy.
Sadie was pulled along the ground, her eyes bloodshot and fierce. She pointed at Petra and shouted defiantly, determined to make sure no one

got off easy.
“You call me a bad person, but are you really so kind to Hayley? What have I done to Hayley that you don’t approve of?
“Who bragged to me that Hayley ran up and down the stairs five or six times in the scorching summer and ended up miscarrying? You wanted a grandson, right? Keep dreaming!
“I curse that you’ll never have grandchildren in your life!”
Sadie ripped off her mask so quickly that even as she was dragged away, her angry curses echoed through the household.
At that moment, only one thought crossed Jim’s mind…
My miscarriage was not an accident.
Still lost in thought, Jim was jolted back by a servant’s shocked voice.
“Oh my god, Ms. Bronson is pregnant!”
Not far off, a servant held an ultrasound report that had slipped out of a book with shaky fingers.
The test was from a month ago.
