Explosive images played across the television screen &
Lily nestled coquettishly in the arms of a white–haired old man, her voice saccharine.
“The baby’s yours~ You have to take responsibility~“g
The old man replied in stiff Mandarin,
“Little devil, I’ll give you money. Get rid of the child.“%
Tears brimmed in Lily’s eyes.
“I don’t want money! I love you so much!”
But the man crudely kissed her and squeezed her waist. Lily giggled and tapped his chest.
“So annoying~ I’ll just find a cheap substitute dad for my baby~”
Next, the assistant handed over a medical report–Lily had never been diagnosed with depression.
Lucas collapsed into his chair, the blood draining from his face.
Moments later, the assistant returned with a thick folder, her voice shaking.
“Mr. Turner… this is everything we’ve found about Madam–Ms. Carter.”
Lucas froze after just one glance.
The man and woman who had attended their wedding as her “parents” were professional actors from separate film academies. Jonathan did have one daughter–closely protected. After his wife passed away, he changed their daughter’s surname to her mother’s to keep her identity hidden. She was sent to a private school abroad and kept far from public view.
One photo showed Nina in a school uniform, standing before the Carter Group’s annual meeting banner, Jonathan’s arm gently around her shoulder.
“Ms. Carter is indeed the only daughter of the Carter family,” the assistant confirmed, wiping sweat from her brow.
“After Mrs. Carter passed, Mr. Carter was extremely protective. In order to marry you…“}]
“Go on,” Lucas rasped.
“She gave up her right to inherit 80% of the Carter Group’s shares. After a major falling–out with her father, she ran away from home. Mr. Carter froze all her accounts, so she worked odd jobs to support herself.“}
She passed over another image–surveillance footage of Nina wearing an apron, taking orders at a coffee shop.
“Later, when you proposed, Mr. Carter sent people to bring her home. He locked her up. She went on a hunger strike in protest, and finally…” The assistant hesitated.
“What happened?“}
“She knelt in front of the Carter family’s old residence for three days and nights. Only then did Mr. Carter relent–on the condition that she remain anonymous and never disclose her identity.”
Lucas turned the page. It was their wedding photo.
“A week before the wedding,” the assistant continued, “President Carter conducted a full background check on you, but still wasn’t convinced. Ms. Carter threatened suicide. In the end, he hired actors to pose as her parents so the wedding could proceed.“>
With a loud slam, Lucas shut the folder. His chest heaved as shock and guilt consumed him.
The woman, who had always smiled so gently beside him… had sacrificed everything to be with him.
He recalled how coldly he had treated her in recent months. His face paled.}
Without a word, he smashed his fist against the table. Glass shattered, blood streamed from his hand–but he didn’t flinch.
In the weeks that followed, the Turner Group was hit by an unprecedented storm.
Stocks plunged. Investors pulled out. Creditors demanded repayment. Lucas fought day and night to keep the company afloat. But Nina’s face haunted his every waking moment.
After thirty sleepless days, he finally stabilized the situation.
He returned to the villa, only to find it stripped bare of her presence. Every trace of Nina vanished.
He wandered into the nursery–unused baby supplies stacked neatly in a corner. The sight stabbed deep into his heart.
Memories surged.”
That day, Nina held up a pregnancy test stick, eyes twinkling with joy.”
“Lucas, we’re going to be parents!“}
She took his hand and hesitated.
“Actually… there’s something important I need to tell you.“}
Now, thinking back, he realized–she had wanted to reveal the truth then. About her real identity. About everything.}
But he had been too self–absorbed to listen.
Too blind to see the woman who had loved him beyond measure.}
