The cop pushed me away and kept talking.
“When Brittany was being assaulted, she tried
to cooperate with the drunk. She could have
avoided getting hurt, but after he was done, she
told him to stay, that you were on your way
back, that you were a virgin, and that he should assault you, too.
“The drunk knew he was there to assault Mark’s
girlfriend, and he knew Mark was into her best friend. When he heard Brittany say that, he thought she was a real piece of work, so he started beating her up…”
“That’s why we think this whole thing was
planned by Brittany and Mark, but they didn’t
get their stories straight, and that’s what led to
this mess.”
After that, the police took Mark away. Brittany
screamed that she was innocent, but no one
believed her. I played the part of the devastated
victim, leaving the hospital.
A week later, Brittany was cleared of all
charges.
I knew this was coming. Brittany might have dropped hints, but she hadn’t actually done anything. As soon as I heard the news, I went back to the hospital.
I wasn’t there to forgive Brittany. I needed to set the stage for what was coming next.
Brittany was lying in bed, not as agitated as she had been the week before. Her eyes were
empty, and she barely reacted when she saw
- me.
I sighed and sat down, putting on my most sincere voice. “I know… you got HIV, syphilis, HPV, and a bunch of other STDS from that
drunk, but as long as you’re alive, there’s hope.”
“I was so mad at you and Mark, but now I get it. It’s not your fault. It’s all Mark’s fault. He even
fooled me. How could you have known any
better?”
Brittany stared at me like I was an idiot, but she
didn’t say anything.
I kept talking. “You’re stuck in the hospital, so
you probably don’t know. The video of you
getting assaulted got leaked. Now the whole
internet knows you were begging and praying
to that drunk. Kneeling down and crying”
“I heard your parents are sick with worry back
home. They said they never want to see your
face again. But it won’t always be like this.
Things will get better with time. It’s all Mark’s
fault.”
<
That’s when Brittany finally snapped. “It’s not
Mark’s fault! It’s all your fault! I should have
been the one who died!”
“But don’t think you’ve gotten away with this.
As soon as I get out of here, I’m going to get you. I’m going to kill you. I don’t care where you run. I’m going to find you and kill you!”
Hearing that made me smile. Now I had what I
needed.
