“But don’t worry, I have a plan. We’re going to
leave this city. We’re never coming back!”
“Don’t blame Brittany. Blame the fact that
you’re so awesome and things happened that
night, she got STD from the drunk and that’s
why she’s so mad and she wants you to die
together, so don’t go see her. Otherwise, she’ll pretend to be nice, and then she’ll kill you.”
I kept talking, and Mark started to listen. “Okay.
I can see who’s on my side and who isn’t. If she
really cared about me, she would have been here today.”
I nodded and drove Mark home, reminding him
again and again, “Mark, don’t go see Brittany.
She hates you. She’s sneaky. I’m afraid she’s
going to hurt you. As soon as I sell the house,
we’re leaving. We’re never coming back!”
“As long as we’re careful, Brittany won’t get a chance to hurt you. I want you to be okay.”
Seeing how sincere I was, Mark finally believed me. He hugged me. “I didn’t know what I had. I never should have tested you. I was wrong. I’ll never do it again.”
I forced a smile. I hoped Mark would catch my drift and go see Brittany.
I waited, anxious, for a few days.
Finally. I saw the
Finally, I saw the news on TV: Mark had been
arrested for murder. The camera showed Mark
covered in blood. His eyes were vacant. “I was
acting in self–defense! She had so many STDs.
She wanted me to remove my clothes. She knew what she was doing!”
“She wanted me to get sick and die. She let me
stay at her house. She wanted to wait for me to fall asleep and dismember me. I killed her in self–defense. I’m innocent. Ask my girlfriend! She knows everything!”
Seeing that, I finally relaxed. My plan was over, after six months and much anxiety.
I could have sold the house and left. Knowing Brittany and Mark, they probably wouldn’t have come after me. But I wanted them to pay the price.
Why should they get away with trying to kill
me? That’s why I went to the hospital, setting
Brittany up to say those things, so I could
record them.
Over the past six months, I’d learned how to
edit audio. I made the perfect recording. I knew
that once Mark calmed down, he would start to
suspect me. So he would go see Brittany.
Brittany wouldn’t know that Mark knew, so she
would try to sleep with him. That’s all it would
take for Mark to snap.
He’s a conceited man. This time, he would see
that he would die!
In the end, Mark was sentenced to death for
murder. The day before his execution, I went to
see him and told him the truth.
Seeing his face fall apart filled me with
satisfaction.
Without those two demons in my life, I knew I
could finally be happy.
