“I’m telling you, I’m not going to break up with
Mark over this. When he gets out, he’s still
going to love me! We’re going to be together
forever. We’re going to have a better life than
you!”
I nodded. “I know you signed a letter forgiving
Mark. You forgave the drunk, too, right?”
Brittany shook her head. “I’m never going to
forgive him. I want him to die. If it wasn’t for
him screwing things up, not even knowing if you
were home, I wouldn’t be here!”
“And, I don’t need to hide anything from you.
Mark had the idea, thanks to me! I was the one
L
who kept suggesting he test you. That’s why he
did it!”
“Mark’s family has already bribed him. He’s
going to change his story. He’s going to say he was working with you, that he was your lover. I
know what your birthmarks look like. I already
told the drunk. When the evidence comes out,
that’s it!”
“Even if we can’t get you thrown in jail, we can
at least make Mark look innocent.”
“Maybe Mark won’t even have to do any time. But you… you better watch out. You’re not just on my bad side. You’re on the drunk’s bad side,
too! Don’t worry, before Mark and I kill you,
we’re going to let the drunk come pay you a
visit.”
“You’re welcome. We’re just giving you a taste
of deja vu, hahaha!”
I knew Brittany was just talking big, but I didn’t.
argue. It was more fun to let her have hope, because with hope came real despair.
I didn’t say anything. I just stood up. I had what
I needed, so I didn’t need to stay here,
pretending to be friends with this snake.
About six months passed. Brittany was still in
the hospital. She wasn’t still recovering from
the assault, but because some after–effect, she
was admitted to the hospital many times.
Mark got out of jail, just like Brittany said. The
letter must have worked.
