Brittany frowned. “What are you smiling about? Think you’ve won?”
“I’m telling you, I don’t care that I got assaulted.
I’m not some old–fashioned prude. I don’t give a damn about being a virgin!”
“And Mark and I are in love. I don’t blame him
L
for what happened. I’m going to write him a
letter, so he can get out of prison early!”
“Then we’ll see who’s laughing.”
I shook my head. “I’m not laughing about that. I’m laughing because you just answered a question I’ve been asking myself.”
Brittany looked confused. I went on, “I’ve been wondering how you knew it was Mark behind all
of this. Now I get it. You know about the future, right? You’re a goddamn time traveler aren’t
you?”
“Because you know the future, that means you know Mark did it, right?”
Brittany’s face was like thunder. She went pale.
“You… you know about the future too? Did you
set me up? Did you make me go to your apartment so I’d get assaulted? Is that it?”
I nodded. “Yep. Last time, I fought back like hell. You said you would have killed yourself to protect your innocence, so I thought I’d see if
you’d really do it.”
I made a tsking sound. “But after watching the video, I know you don’t do it, you have fun with
the bum.”
Brittany was almost screaming. “Why? Why did you do this to me? If you know about the
future, you could have protected yourself. Why did you drag me into this?”
I just shrugged. “Why? Let me ask you something. I was so good to you. Why did you stab me in the back? Why did you leak the
video of me getting assaulted? Why did you try
to suffocate me?”
“You took my life. All I did was take a little
interest.”
Brittany laughed. “You deserved it.”
“You say you were good to me, but what did you ever give me? Clothes you didn’t want, perfume you didn’t like, You bought a house, but it was under your name, and you still have the gall to charge me rent.”
“You treated me like a pet. If you really cared about me, why didn’t you buy me new clothes? Why didn’t you let me have half of the money so I could make a down payment?”
“And you don’t even care about me. If you did,
you would have seen that I was in love with
Mark, too. You should have given him to me!”
Her words were sickening.
No good deed goes unpunished. That was
Brittany in a nutshell.
I sighed. “First, the clothes I gave you weren’t
clothes I didn’t want. I looked through your
Wishlist and picked stuff out for you. All the
other gifts, too. Why do you think I always got things wrong, stuff I wouldn’t normally buy, but I
never returned them?”
“Second, I didn’t buy the house outright. My
parents gave me the down payment. I told you I
paid cash because I was afraid you’d feel bad
about paying rent!”
Brittany’s face twisted. She looked
embarrassed. But she just sneered. “That’s your
problem, not mine!”
