Chapter 4 – He’ll Never Choose Me
Rachel’s Pov
“Don’t think that if you pretend to be pitiful like this, I will keep you and let you be my stepmother!”
“If you have the ability to leave, never come back!”
The sharp arrow, carrying the young man’s resentment, shot straight at me.
I barely had time to dodge the arrow but it grazed my shoulder, embedding itself into my skin as a pained scream ripped from my throat.
Micheal was beside me in an instant. He held me as I gritted my teeth in pain.
“I’m so sorry, Rachel,” he cried.
Suddenly, Susan let out a scream and Ivan also screamed.
“Come, Papa, Aunty Susan has twisted her ankle where she was running to help that witch!” Ivan cried.
Micheal looked conflicted as he stared at Susan’s pitiful state then he released me and sighed.
“It’s a clean injury, Rachel, go to the hospital, I’ll meet you there. I need to take Susan to the hospital because she can’t walk,” he stated.
If I felt any disappointment I didn’t show it. But I remained on the floor as I watched Micheal walk away from me again.
He carried Susan bridal style and I saw the smug look she gave me as they entered the car and drove out with Ivan.
As usual, I remained on the floor in a pool of my own blood shot by the arrow of a child I had trained, cared for and taught him how to shoot.
Fate was indeed a bitch!
I struggled to stand up when I heard footsteps behind me.
“You wretched girl! Why are you still here? Didn’t you announce to the entire city that you’re leaving?”
I knew the voice too well. It was Maria, Micheal’s mother. She had never liked me.
I managed to stand up and I faced her. She gasped when she saw my injury and the blood on my body.
“Do you want to implicate my son? Why do you want to kill yourself here? Go and die outside!” she hissed at me.
“I was leaving but your grandson shot an arrow at me,” I said to her.
She scoffed, “You hurt yourself and now you’re looking for someone to blame. You’re acting pitiful so Micheal will take pity on you and ask you to come back. You know that you have no place here the moment you decided to leave.”

“I want nothing from you and your family, Maria. It’s your grandson that hurt me!” I snapped.
She scoffed, “Then you won’t have a problem getting out of here.”
Before I could say a word she grabbed my boxes and tossed them outside the compound.
“Get out!” she hissed, pushing me out while yelling, “Go and die outside. Leave my son alone.”
I staggered, falling to the floor as I inhaled sharply, holding my bleeding shoulder.
“You’ll all regret this!” I swore, my heart filled with rage.
I managed to gather my box as my uber arrived.
“Sorry for the delay, Miss,” he apologized.
“It’s fine,” I waved him off as I entered the car.
He stared at my bleeding shoulder, “Are you still going to the airport?”
I shook my head, “Take me to the hospital first.”
I relaxed and shortly after my eyes closed.

The next time I opened my eyes I was hearing the beeping sound of an EKG machine.
I realized that I was in the hospital. I tried to sit up but my arm hurt badly. I could see my boxes beside my bed.
The door opened and the doctor came inside.
“Miss Rachel, how are you feeling?” he asked.
I groaned, “What happened? Last time I was in a taxi.”
The doctor nodded, “You passed out before you got to the hospital. The uber driver brought you here.”
I sighed and checked my phone. I had missed my flight and I had a text message. I replied the message quickly.
Something came up. Reschedule my flight ASAP…
“Miss Rachel?” the doctor called, pulling my attention away from my phone.
I arched a brow, “Yes?”
“You lost a lot of blood but now you’ve received treatment you’ll be discharged soon,” he informed me.
I nodded, “That’s perfect. Thank you.”
The doctor smiled and left. I stood up and grabbed my boxes. There was no single missed call from Micheal. His son shot me and he didn’t even bother to know how I’m doing.
The door opened and Susan sauntered in. I rolled my eyes at her.

The doctor smiled and left. I stood up and grabbed my boxes. There was no single missed call from Micheal. His son shot me and he didn’t even bother to know how I’m doing.
The door opened and Susan sauntered in. I rolled my eyes at her.
“What do you want? Didn’t you twist your ankle?” I queried.
She giggled, “Oh no. I just wanted to know what Micheal would do if both of us were in
danger. And he saved me! Isn’t that exciting?”
I scoffed, “Have fun, Susan. I’m leaving.”
Susan stepped in my path, a slow, smug smile curling on her lips.
“There’s something you need to know,” she said, her voice dripping with satisfaction. I’m pregnant with Michael’s child.”
The world around me seemed to still.
My heart shattered into a million pieces, but I refused to let the pain show on my face. I wouldn’t give her that satisfaction.
Eight years. Eight years of being by Michael’s side, of being nothing more than a shadow in his life.
And in all that time, he had always made sure I took birth control pills the moment he was
done with me.
