Chapter 8
Dominic suddenly dropped to his knees, his voice cracking as he begged through tears.
Greg’s eyes darkened. He stood up, clearly ready to teach Dominic a lesson, but I held up a hand to stop him.
“No,” I said calmly, shaking my head with finality.
“Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough. The moment you signed that marriage certificate and chose Jenny over me, whatever we had was over.”
Dominic looked like all the life had drained out of him, but he still clung to a thread of hope. “If Jenny hadn’t been around, would I be the one here now, watching you in a wedding dress?”
“There are no what–ifs.
I did not hesitate.
Greg, standing beside me, gently toyed with the diamond ring, his tone sharp and mocking.
“From the moment you failed to see she was a rare gem, your chance ended right there,” he said.
“In fact, I should be thanking you for being foolish enough to let her come back to me.”
It was the first time I had seen this sharp edge to Greg’s personality, and I could not help the small smile that tugged at my lips.
With each word Greg threw, Dominic’s face lost more color.

Suddenly, Dominic slammed his fist into the glass window beside him. It shattered with a loud crash. Blood immediately spilled from his knuckles, and the staff screamed in alarm.
He dropped to his knees in the broken shards, his legs quickly drenched in blood.
“I’m sorry, Julia,” he cried. “I owe you too much, and this is how I pay you
back.
“You said a good ex should be like the dead. So, I’ll do what you want.”
He looked like a furious child as he grabbed a jagged shard of glass and held it to his own neck, tears streaming down his face.
However, I did not move. I just stood there, watching coldly. No panic. No mercy.
His chest heaved violently, like something had just crushed it from the
inside.
The piece of glass in his hand trembled, but he could not bring himself to push it even a millimeter further.
He collapsed onto the ground, sobbing in defeat.
I turned, took Greg’s hand, and walked out with him slowly.
Yet, right at the door, we ran into Jenny, who had clearly rushed over.
She saw me but barely reacted. Her eyes immediately went to Greg, and she greeted him with cautious respect.
Then she rushed to Dominic’s side, helping him up as he cried like a lost child.
Maybe it was just my imagination.

Yet somehow, Jenny always showed up at the most convenient time.
It felt like she was following someone else’s script.

She pulled me into a hug, her eyes brimming with tears, gently stroking my hair.
“My sweet girl, you must’ve had such a hard time out there on your own.”
مر
She did not scold me for disappearing without a word–she was just worried about how I had been doing.
That warmth completely broke me, and I threw myself into her arms like a
child.
When we talked about my impulsive decision to run from the wedding three years ago, I explained it simply–I did not want to be a trophy wife for the rest of my life.
I wanted to prove something.
That even as their only daughter, I could hold up the family legacy without relying on marriage.
So I came to Los Angeles, joined the Pilkins family’s company, and worked my way up from the very bottom.
My mom noticed the matching couple rings on Greg’s and my fingers and smiled knowingly.
“Actually,” she said, “your dad and I had a talk back then. The original idea of arranging your marriage was to find a decent kid from a good family–someone who understands you and will take care of you. But if

you truly didn’t like him, we were ready to call it off.
“But now, it seems I was worried for nothing. I should probably start preparing to be a grandma instead.”
I glanced down shyly and stared at my toes. Greg squeezed my hand gently, and we exchanged a smile.
“We’ll do our best.”

What Greg said made her beam with joy, and that made my whole heart light up
I thought life would just carry on peacefully from there.
Yet, what I did not expect was that Dominic would be this unwilling to
let go.
