Chapter 18
Beckham’s eyes widened in shock, but instead of rushing forward, he stood there, rooted to the spot, his gaze never leaving the trembling Caroline.
She lifted her face, her face pale, but her eyes were piercingly bright.
She stared at Graysen, her gaze flat and unblinking, as if looking at a corpse. But she didn’t utter a single word.
Instead, she pounced on him, fists and feet flying in a furious barrage, each punch and kick landing with sickening thuds.
She kicked with all her might, tears glimmering in her eyes. Her once pale face had turned an almost crazed red, as she vented her rage.
Graysen clenched his teeth and took it, not retaliating, only grunting in pain, each hit forcing more air from his lungs.
It wasn’t until Graysen collapsed to the ground, unable to rise, that Caroline finally stopped.
She didn’t bother addressing the earlier questions. Her voice was thick with fury as she spat out, “Don’t come near me. You make me sick! If you keep talking nonsense, I won’t hesitate to beat the shit out of you!”
The malice in her eyes made Graysen’s eyes widen in fear.
A wave of regret washed over him as he realized too late that his impulsive words had crossed a line. But Caroline had no intention of explaining herself.
He had thought that even if she no longer loved him, she’d at least still hate him because hate
meant she still cared.
But now, Caroline only showed disgust.
Lying there in the rain, his body went numb from the beating, and his voice was barely a whisper as he repeated, “I’m sorry… I lost my mind earlier. I…”
Caroline didn’t even acknowledge him. As she turned to leave, her legs buckled, and she nearly collapsed.
Beckham was there in an instant, steadying her with a firm grip. He didn’t stop her from venting her anger, but when it was over, he gently gathered her up and carried her back to the dorm.
At that moment, Graysen finally realized that he and Caroline were over for good.
He tilted his head back, closed his eyes, and his lips trembled slightly, silently mouthing her name.
But no matter how hard he called her name in his heart, the woman who once loved him would

never forgive him now.
Graysen let out a sudden, bitter laugh, but as he laughed, tears mixed with the rain and fell to the
earth:
Back at the dorm, perhaps due to exhaustion and the weight of her emotions, Caroline fell into a deep, convulsing sleep, her body trembling violently as she muttered “Dad, Mom…”
Beckham, with a towel in hand, carefully dried her off and tucked her into bed. He gently held her hands as he sat beside her, quietly watching over her.
It was as if Caroline sensed his presence, for after a few moments, the tremors slowly subsided, and she drifted into a peaceful, deep sleep,
Beckham softly smoothed the crease between her brows, gazing at her sleeping face. For a rare moment, he let out a self–deprecating chuckle. “Beckham, look at you now…”
The next morning, Beckham left Caroline’s dorm.
From that day on, rumors began to swirl through the bomb disposal team and across the entire
base.
The captain of the bomb disposal team, Beckham, and his partner were reportedly having an affair,
two men fighting over one woman.
At first, Caroline didn’t take it seriously. But soon, upon returning to the base, other team members
openly mocked her.
“I thought you were so amazing? Turns out you’re just great in bed. No wonder Beckham always teams up with you. Since you’re so easy, how about letting me try, too…”
Before he could finish, Graysen’s fist silenced him.
As the two men squared off in the training field, everyone rushed in to break it up, shouting, “Stop fighting, or you’ll get disciplined!”
But they couldn’t be pulled apart easily. It wasn’t until Caroline drew a stun baton from her waist and stepped between them that they finally separated.
With a cold look, she turned to Graysen and said, “My business has nothing to do with you. Stay out
of it.”
She then turned to the other man, her voice challenging. “You wanted to know how tough I am? Let’s see it on the training field.”
Her eyes swept over the crowd, her gaze sharp and unyielding. “Anyone else who has something to say? Step up.”
She threw one last scornful remark over her shoulder. “If you’ve got the guts, meet me in the

training ground. Don’t be a coward talking behind my back.”
And with that, she walked away, leaving the air heavy with tension.
After that night, the bomb disposal team no longer had a single word of complaint about Caroline
Instead, they started submitting requests to Beckham, wanting to team up with her for missions. If drove Beckham crazy, and he ended up chasing everyone away.
From then on, the gap between Caroline and her teammates gradually closed.
But Marlene, watching all of this, was burning with jealousy. She schemed to make trouble for
Caroline.
One day, during a break, the team had to go to the city to gather supplies. The base was short on resources, so they had to head into town, carrying weapons for safety.
The security situation in Noredge was lax, and robberies and murders were everyday occurrences.
Even with their precautions, trouble found them on the street.
A group of people, seeing their weapons, mistook them for armed militants and opened fire.
The street erupted into chaos as pedestrians screamed and ran in all directions.
Suddenly, a shot rang out, and a voice shouted from behind, “Watch out!”
Caroline was yanked into someone’s arms, and then there was a muffled groan. Looking up, she
realized it was Graysen who was shielding her.
Her face darkened. She glanced over the chaotic team, furrowed her brows, and then forcefully
pushed Graysen into the car.
A few minutes later, the police arrived, and order was restored to the street.
As they drove away, Graysen, who had kept his eyes shut the entire time, suddenly opened them and, in a cold voice, asked, “Why did you shoot at Caroline, Marlene?”
