Chapter 5
“You bitch! You lied to me!” Marcus hissed, his eyes bloodshot as he gripped Nina’s neck.
“Haven’t I treated you well enough? You can’t even have children, so how could I marry you? I have humiliated Emily enough for you!”
Nina choked, then erupted into uncontrollable laughter. “Yes. You even sent me pictures of your wedding night. I just sent them to Emily. I wonder if the shock will cause her to miscarry. Oh, and remember the young girl who saved you from the snow back then? That was your wife- the one you’d tormented relentlessly!”
Meanwhile, when I saw the picture, my blood froze to ice.

The blinding red in the image stung my eyes. A ringing filled my ears, and my body began to convulse.
I knew I was having an attack. I opened the drawer by my bed and grabbed a handful of pills my therapist prescribed, swallowing them dry. The bitterness clawed up my throat, and I vomited bile all over the floor.
“Ah!” I screamed, clutching my head in agony.
Warm moisture ran down between my legs and pooled on the ground beneath me, forming a dark, spreading spot of blood.
I gazed blankly at the blood running from my body, and it strangely overlapped with the image in my thoughts.
I couldn’t believe Marcus did this to me.
I’ve lost my baby again, yet strangely I felt relieved.

It was a blessing that I didn’t have to give birth to that bastard’s child.
The moment I saw the picture, my love for him vanished instantly–just like the child inside me.
When Marcus returned home and saw me lying in a pool of blood, he lost
his mind.
He held me in his arms, all traces of pride stripped away. My blood stained him too and our sins were now tangled.
Maybe it was because I was more pitiful than Nina, or maybe it was her betrayal, or that he finally realized I had been his savior all along. Whatever the reason, his so–called devotion shifted back to me.
But tenderness never lasts. Soon enough, he went back to staying out late and leaving early.
It was only then that I understood–if it wasn’t Nina, it would have been someone else.
At 3 a.m., Marcus came home reeking of alcohol. When he saw me curled up on the sofa, he was taken aback.
“Why aren’t you in bed?” He reached out to touch my forehead.
I dodged his hand, and my instinctive reaction made him freeze.
“Emily?” His voice was low and dangerous.
I looked up at him and suddenly smiled. “Marcus, do you know how my mother died?”
He frowned, clearly caught off guard by the sudden turn.
“She died waiting for a man who never came back,” I whispered. “I’m tired of it all. Let’s get a divorce.”

When Marcus heard this, he let out a low chuckle, and his eyes turned cold.
He grabbed my neck and spat, “Emily, you came to me first, and you get to leave unless I say so.”
don’t
I sank my teeth into his palm and tasted blood. But he only laughed and pulled me into his arms. “Be good, Emily. Let your anger out and return to being obedient just as before.”
I let go and dropped to the floor, choking with terror and disgust.
I didn’t know what to do. At that moment, I regret ever having loved him.
Then I started packing.
He stood at the doorway, his crisp suit clean and gorgeous as ever, like the man I had fallen in love with at first sight.
But now, he felt like a stranger.
“Where are you going?” Marcus’s voice was low and commanding.
I paused and stared at him calmly. “The divorce arrangement is on the table, and I have already signed it.”
His gaze darkened. Then, he strode toward me and grabbed my wrist. “Don’t be ridiculous. I already punished her, didn’t I?”
Marcus softened his expression and sat me on the bed, pulling me into his lap, his cheek pressed against mine.
He persuaded me softly. “All of it is in the past now. Didn’t we agree to forget everything and start again?”
I laughed, and tears spilled from my eyes. “Marcus, how long do you plan to keep torturing me? “Didn’t you once drag me to the hospital for an

abortion because of Nina? Don’t you love her anymore?”
He stared at me before reaching out and wiping away my tears with his thumb. “I was a bastard once. I wasn’t sure what true love was. Emily, we can still have children someday.”
Upon hearing his words, I gave a harsh chuckle. “There someday.”

The man who had before looked down on everyone was now in tears. He tugged gently on the hem of my shirt and begged, “Can we not have a divorce?”
After learning that I would not only have difficulty in having children in the future but also had a serious mental illness, he completely fell apart.
He’d driven me mad on purpose, just to justify taking back my shares. But now, he looked more broken than anyone.
“Let’s get a divorce. I’ll let you go. You let me go, too.”
Marcus shook his head frantically, his voice quivering as he wept. “I was mistaken, Emily. You can hit, yell, or stab me. Just please don’t leave me.”
I looked down at him. The man who once made me lose my mind was now kneeling at my feet like a beggar.
I gently ran my fingers through his hair as though I were patting a dog.
“Marcus, do you remember what you said to the doctor after my third miscarriage?” I asked softly. Before he could answer, I continued, “You said… even if I died on the operating table, make sure the surgery was done properly.”
At this point, his body froze, and all color drained from his face.
“Emily…” He suddenly wrapped his arms around my waist from behind,

his tears soaking my shoulder. “I bought an island and named it after you. Let’s leave everything behind and start over, okay?”
I let out a quiet laugh and pried his fingers off me. “Do you remember the first birthday gift you gave me?”
His eyes lit up. “The diamond necklace…”
“No.” I cut him off. “It was a box of birth control pills, and you instructed me to take them on time.”
