Chapter 8
But before I could say another word, a group of police officers stormed in and surrounded Leila.
The scene was so intense that Leila was left speechless.
Right after that, the mayor, Laurence Hatton, showed up with his team, and even the manager’s attempts to smooth things over didn’t help at all.
“I heard you broke the rules by smoking on the tarmac, almost delaying my son’s rescue. Is that true?” Laurence asked.
Even though she didn’t know who the man was, Leila was so terrified by everything going on that her lips quivered, and she couldn’t get a single word out.
“Leila, why are you still standing around? Hurry up and apologize!
“Don’t you realize who that child is? That’s the mayor’s son! What you did on the flight could be seen as trying to hurt someone on purpose!”
When she heard that, Leila’s legs gave out and she collapsed on the floor.
“What? That kid… he’s the mayor’s son?”
Her face was frozen in shock.
As she thought about her actions during the flight, she felt it was a miracle she hadn’t been thrown in jail already.
She looked up at me, clearly scrambling to find a way to pin the blame on
- me.

But when she tried to speak, no words came out.
It wasn’t until they lifted her arms and started dragging her out that Leila finally managed to speak again.
“This has nothing to do with me! It’s all Jordyn’s fault! She was the one who provoked and threatened me. You should go after her instead!”
But nobody bothered listening to her.
Before leaving, Laurence shot me a long, meaningful glance.
A chill ran through me, and I couldn’t stop worrying if I might have done something wrong on the flight myself.
Leila was arrested for intentional assault, and truth be told, even if Laurence hadn’t said a word, there would’ve been plenty of people eager to make sure she got some “special treatment” behind bars.
Thanks to what I did during the emergency, I was promoted and became a captain.
The day I got promoted was also the day Raylan lost his job and was taken away by the police.
He still refused to sign the divorce papers. I knew exactly what was going on in his mind.
It wasn’t because he loved me.
He just couldn’t stand the thought of giving me the money he worked so hard for all those years.
When the police arrested him, he only had one wish–to see me one last time. But I turned him down without a second thought.
“Instead of a meeting, he’d be smarter to just sign the divorce papers

already,” I told my lawyer, feeling a weight lifted off my shoulders.
At last, Raylan had the lawyer send me a message.
He said he was sorry.
But what exactly was he sorry for?
Was it for forcing me to apologize to Leila in front of everyone over something I didn’t do?
Or was it for betraying our marriage from the very start, setting me up, and cheating with Leila?

Or was it because he kept stalling the divorce, making both of us waste so much time and energy?
I wasn’t curious anymore.
I didn’t get another chance at life just to hear his apology.
Seeing Raylan and Leila get locked up for over ten years, and knowing that even if they ever got out, they’d be blacklisted from their jobs and hated online, watching them suffer the consequences they brought on themselves, seeing their lives fall apart, and knowing that things finally returned to how they should be–that was the real reason I got a second chance at life.
