Chapter 1
“The flight’s already twenty minutes late,” purser Maisie Quinn snapped from the cockpit doorway.
“If we don’t take off now, we’ll miss the surgery window. And passengers are getting restless.”
Captain Raylan Moffett didn’t even flinch. His scowl deepened.
“Who’s in charge here–you or me? I said we wait. No one moves.
Maisie’s voice sharpened.
“Leila is out there smoking on the tarmac. That’s a serious violation. You’re really going to risk a child’s future for her?”
Without warning, she reached for the radio.
Raylan snatched the handset and smashed it against the console.
“You let a crew member break protocol, and I’m the one getting blamed? Fine. Go ahead–report it. Let’s see who survives that fallout.”
Maisie turned red with fury. Her eyes flicked to me–pleading.
I offered a soft smile and gently ushered her out.
“The captain’s made his decision. Just tell the passengers… we’ll arrive on time.”
Raylan gave me a nod of approval.
“Finally, someone who understands. It’s just a few minutes.”

Chapter 1
Understanding? Really?
I stared at the controls, pretending to agree. But inside, I remembered.
Last time, he ignored every warning. Just to cover for Leila.
To prevent passenger complaints and protect his career, I contacted the tower, took off despite his objection, and even made up an excuse to cover for him.
But instead of thanking me, he resented me for interfering—and that resentment eventually got me killed.
This time, I stayed out of it.
Ten more minutes passed. Leila Gardel finally sauntered onto the plane. But instead of reporting to the back, she came straight into the cockpit.
The moment she entered, I caught the sharp stench of alcohol.
Drinking on duty was absolutely forbidden.
She plopped down casually, smiling.
“Ray, my head’s spinning. Mind if I rest here for a bit?
“Didn’t you promise to let me watch the landing from here? Let’s do that today, okay?”
Just then, Maisie burst back in, clearly panicked.
“Captain, the child’s gone into shock. We have to take off now, or his life could be in danger!”
Then she spotted Leila lounging in the cockpit.
“What are you doing here? We’re understaffed! Get out there and help!”

Leila didn’t move. She just looked at Raylan with those wide, innocent
eyes.
As Maisie stepped forward to pull her out, Raylan shoved the throttle forward.
The plane surged down the runway, and Maisie fell hard from the sudden force.
Then he said with smug disdain, “Leila is delicate. She’s not cut out for serving passengers.
“I’m giving her the day off today. Now get out of my cockpit, or I’ll report you for interfering with the flight.”
Maisie’s face flushed with rage, but she had no choice–she stormed out.
Grinning, Leila wrapped her arms around Raylan’s neck and planted a hard kiss on his right cheek.
“Thank you so much, Ray. You are the best.”

Then she turned to me. Her eyes sparkled with mockery, but her tone was laced with false guilt.
“Sorry, Jordyn. Guess I crossed a line.”
Before I could even speak, Raylan rushed to defend her.
“Come on, it was just a joke. Don’t overreact.”
I stared at the red lipstick smeared on his collar and gave a cold smile.
“How about letting her sit in my seat? So you two can enjoy your private time together–without any interruptions.”
