Chapter 7 Are You Nuts?
Madeleine was so startled that she swallowed a surge of bile down her throat.
She stuttered, “I….. The doctor prescribed me some pills for my recovery, which are quite harsh on the stomach. I always feel sick after taking them.”
‘Alright then.” Madilyn glanced at her suspiciously.
“Don’t they say women need to rest for a few days after getting an abortion? Why are you back so quickly?”
Madeleine tried her best to appear calm. To better convince Madilyn, she even jumped twice.
“I’ve already rested for four days, which is enough. Besides, I’m always healthy and recover quickly.”
Only then was Madilyn slightly relieved. She had been so nervous, thinking Madeleine didn’t get an abortion at all.
Then she changed the subject. “Were you at Vincent’s office?”
Madeleine nodded. “Ms. Henson asked me to deliver the new design proposal to him.”
Then she quickly pressed the elevator button. The second the doors were open, she strode inside.
Staying with Madilyn was so awkward, and she just wanted to leave as quickly as possible.

Once Madilyn knew the truth–that she didn’t abort the babies and even married Vincent–Madilyn would probably go crazy.

Outside, Madilyn glared at the doors, which were already closed, and a cold glint flashed across her eyes.
She thought, “This bitch ruins everything. The doctor made a mistake because of her and her damn name!
“I should make sure she gets out of Marvel Jewelry as soon as possible.
“I’ll eliminate anyone who stands in my way.”

Marvel Jewelry’s annual performance evaluation scores were out.
Madeleine immediately became the center of attention.
She was the first employee to receive an “E” since Vincent took office, as well as the only one in the past five years.
In Marvel Jewelry, the performance ratings were divided into five tiers, which were A, B, C, D, and E, with E being the worst. Those with an E faced the risk of being fired.
Madeleine couldn’t believe her eyes. She gawked at the computer for entirely five minutes, slack–jawed.
She had always treated her job earnestly, doing her best every day. How could she possibly have an E?
After taking a deep breath, she walked toward the director’s office.
“Ms. Henson, why did I get an E?” she asked.

Kristin glanced at her indifferently. “I treat everyone in this department fairly.”
Madeleine felt speechless for a second. Fairly? Was Kristin serious? Did she really know what that word meant?
She had always been cautious and had never contradicted Kristin. What had she ever done to piss Kristin off?
She protested, “I’ve never been late or left early since I was onboard, and I’ve never taken a single day off. Besides, I always complete every design proposal in advance. It’s impossible that I got an E!”
Kristin shrugged. “I don’t think you’re cut out for this department. Everyone here graduated from an overseas university, and you’re the only exception. Besides, you’ve never attended any department gatherings. Since you can’t blend in, I think it’s best that you go somewhere where you fit.”
Hearing this, Madeleine realized Kristin had always been biased against her. Back then, Kristin hadn’t wanted to have her here. It was Hana Shelton, the director of the HR Department, who had recognized her design talent and made an exception to hire her.
As for why she had never attended any department gatherings? She had no money. She had spent most of her money on Jefferson’s medical expenses, leaving just enough to cover her living expenses.
She retorted, “Since you think I’m not good enough, why did you use my proposal? Don’t forget what you promised me.”
Kristin listed herself as the proposal’s designer, which was practically plagiarism, and she only endured it in silence because Kristin had promised her a promotion.

The corner of Kristin’s mouth twitched. She took the risk of choosing Madeleine’s proposal because Vincent had rejected her own proposal more than once.
“To level with you, Madeleine, this order came from above. Personally, I think highly of your talent, but I’m just a department director and don’t have a say.”
Her words stunned Madeleine.
A man’s face emerged in Madeleine’s mind as she asked, “Are you saying this is Mr. Romero’s decision?”
Kristin sighed without saying anything, which was the same as saying Madeleine was right.
Madeleine was utterly dumbfounded.
She thought, “I crossed Vincent a few days ago, and now he wants to fire me?
“How could the boss of a large–scale corporation be this petty and vindictive?”
She immediately turned around and stormed to the CEO’s Office.
The Romero Group owned dozens of listed companies, and Marvel Jewelry was only one of them. Back then, Vincent only came around for meetings. Then suddenly, he started showing up every single day.
Right now, he was leaning against his luxurious chair, enjoying hand- brewed espresso.
Madeleine was so furious that she cut to the chase right after she stormed in.

“Mr. Romero, did you know I got an E on my performance review?”
Vincent tapped his slender finger on the desk a few times.
He knew it this morning.
Was she here to complain to him?

He said, “Everyone here is an elite. You surely are different from them.”
Madeleine keenly detected the mockery in his tone, which enraged her even more.
“I am, of course. I’m the tool, remember, Mr. Romero? They all say a new broom sweeps clean. I guess I’m your chosen sacrifice to prove your authority around here.”
Vincent frowned.
He actually found the word “tool” harsh since she retorted to him.
“Is this how you ask for help?” he asked.
She wanted his help, yet she sounded so harsh? How stupid.
Madeleine glanced at him and seemed to realize something. She snorted, “I talked back last time, which must have pissed you off so much. So, you gave me an E, wanting me to apologize to you and beg you for mercy, right?”
Vincent was slightly stunned.
She actually thought he was the one behind it?
“Are you nuts? Why would I do something like that?”
