Astonished, Madeleine hurried to look at the photo.
The woman in it was indeed her.
“It must’ve been snapped at the jewelry exhibition. Bryson wouldn’t leave me alone until I was irritated.”
After a pause, she continued, “I have standards. First, I won’t go out with a family man. It’s an ethical bottom line. Second, my man must be good- looking. As a designer, I pursue ultimate beauty. I look for the same thing in a man.”
Vincent squinted slightly. His pupils could only be seen a little. It was scary.
“How many men have met your standards?”
Was he prying into her privacy?
Sadness flooded Madeleine’s heart.
“As a relationship virgin, I don’t even know what it’s like to be a woman yet. And now, I’m a mother? Isn’t it pathetic? Am I unlucky or not?”
Vincent didn’t believe a word of it.
She was quite experienced when she seduced him. How could she possibly be a virgin?

He had a remarkable memory and still remembered everything she said.
Madeleine stuck out her tongue. She had only said it anxiously.
There was indeed a young man she liked, though. They met during a trip. But they were out of touch now. Madeleine figured the man was disinterested in her.
“It’s true. But the man and I have never dated.”
“Why not?”
“Well… It’s unrequited love. You know.”
Madeleine’s face was flushed with embarrassment.
Vincent was surprised by her candor.
In fact, he wasn’t interested in her past. He just wanted to make sure he was the father of the baby.
Leaning back in the swivel chair, he sipped a mouthful of coffee. There was an unfathomable, cold look in his eyes.
“Do I meet your standards?”
Vincent’s tone sounded casual, but Madeleine captured the underlying danger in it.
It was a test. One misspoken word, and she would be doomed.
“You’re way above my standards. I’m not good enough for you. I wouldn’t dare to wish for any romance between us.”
A sneer crept onto Vincent’s lips.

“I hope you mean it. Aiming too high won’t bring out anything good.”
Taking the money and leaving was her only choice. If she played any trick under his watch, she would be digging her own grave.
Madeleine wasn’t the greedy type. She was just a plain Jane. All she wanted was a career and a peaceful life.
“Please rest assured. I know what’s right for me.”
Romance with this man was beyond her imagination.
After getting home in the evening, Madeleine thought about the whole thing and felt something was wrong.
The strangest thing was that Kristin had made trouble for her. Madeleine figured it was part of someone’s plan.
Jaylene was cooking in the kitchen.
Madeleine walked over and offered, “Jaylene, let me help you.”
With that, she began washing the vegetables.
Jaylene hastened to stop her. “Ms. Faulkner, you don’t have to do this. As a pregnant lady, you need your rest.”
Madeleine smiled, “I’m not that frail. And it’s just Leine. After so many days, you’re like family to me now.”
Jaylene also felt that Madeleine treated her equally. She liked Madeleine for that.
“Since
you see me as family, I’ll speak frankly with you. Now that you’re carrying Mr. Vincent’s child, why not try to marry him?”

Madeleine was choked. If she did that, she would only be humiliating herself. Besides, the thought of the contemptuous look in Vincent’s eyes unnerved her.
“Jaylene, Mr. Romero likes Ms. Deleon. I wish them happiness. How can I get between them?”
Jaylene waved her hand. “Mr. Vincent doesn’t like Ms. Deleon. Her mom is the adopted daughter of Mr. Vincent’s grandfather, his father’s sister. That makes Ms. Deleon the niece of Mr. Romero. He dotes on her. So, despite Mr. Vincent’s reluctance, he arranged this engagement. In fact, Mr. Vincent likes someone else.
“Huh? Who is it?”
Madeleine was intrigued.
