“I think I can guess why you wanted me here,” she said, raising
an eyebrow. “Judging by how sneaky we had to be to even get
into the pack, surrounded by wolves.”
“I’ve got a war brewing, and I need your help,” I admitted, trying
to push past my pride. “I’m not the type to ask for assistance, but
this time, I really do need it.”
“And what exactly do you want from us? And how you intend
to repay us?” she asked, her tone skeptical. “You and your mate
have a history of not keeping your promises.”
I sneered internally. She had the nerve to even ask me that. If
you ask me, we don’t owe her a damn thing considering she’s
the reason why we’ve suffered so much.
“What do you want?” I asked upfront. She better not asked for
something crazy.
“You know we never demand anything up front,” she replied,
“But when we do need help, you will give it to us with no
strings attached, and in return, I’ll help you with anything you
want now!‘”
“How many people do you plan to bring to help you?” I asked. I
could tell she thought I only wanted her help, but I needed
more than that. “I don’t just need you. I need some of your
coven members as well. We’re not in this alone, and if we’re
going to win. I need every hand I can get.”
“Don’t worry about numbers” she said. “With us on your side,
victory’s practically guaranteed.”
“Let’s just see if that’s true,” I gave her a pointy look, then
changed the topic. “And how much do you know about the
experiments the former king did with wolves and bears? I’ve
been hearing rumors, and I need to know if they’re true.”
She shifted uncomfortably, and for the first time, I saw her
hesitate.
“The only thing I know,” she began, “is that it was a mistake–a
mistake we deeply regret.”
I was pissed by her answer. I didn’t need her useless regret. All I
needed to know was who was responsible.
“That’s not good enough,” I said, feeling my patience thin. “If
you regret it as much as you claim, then you should have no
problem telling me exactly what happened. I need to know how

it ended.” I felt the weight of her silence, but she didn’t respond.
Just then, I heard Matthew’s voice in my mind.
You need to meet us up west in a few minutes.
“Us?” I thought, confused.
Your brother wants to talk to you.
I wanted to say no, but I knew there was no point in resisting. If
my brother wanted to talk, I might as well just give him a
chance. That’s what Violet wanted too.
“Come with me.” I said to the witch, “There’s someone else who
is desperate to know the truth of the past.”
I reached the location in less than five minutes. I asked the
witch to stay behind until I called for her.
When I arrived, I saw him standing there.
My brother.
He looked just as I remembered him–confident, calm. But
knowing the relationship between us now had completely
changed the way I saw him.

“My father wasn’t a bad man,” I said. I has promised I’d stop defending him, but old habits died hard. I couldn’t help him.
“I know he wasn’t. If he was, you would have been long dead in the hands of your brother in law. He was always willing to do anything for his sister, no matter the cost!”
I clenched my fists. The pain from Michael’s betrayal was still fresh. I didn’t know if I should feel better about it given that he was doing all of it for Violet.
“Did you meet Isaac?” I asked. I had to know the connection.
“Of course I did. We both wanted revenge, but the difference was Isaac was doing it for the wrong reasons. Your parents loved him very much.”
“Then what about our father?”
“I know he loved me,” he sighed, sitting on a branch. “That’s
something I’ll never doubt. He was there when I needed him.
And I’m not mad at him for keeping me a secret, because he’s
pretty honest about me with everything.”
“I wish I can be as certain as you,” I said with a bitter smile,
joining him on the branch. “But I’m starting to see him as a
completely different person now that I’ve found out so many

secrets after his death.”
I couldn’t believe my father built a relationship with Xavier. That meant he always knew that I had a brother. But he never bothered to tell me.
