Olivia folded her arms, skeptical. “And how do you know
Asher, Philip, and the others are on the right side of the shield?”
I let out a slow breath, nodding at her concern. “She’s right. This
is a problem.”
“They wouldn’t leave the shield,” Michael replied confidently.
“They’re fighting to keep the enemy outside of the shield.”
Michael had decided that using our blood was the best way to
try and stop the war, but the risk was immense. We had no idea
where all of our enemies were. For all we knew, we could be
walking straight into them.
“The two of you are playing with fire,” our mother said, shaking
her head. “But if this is our only option, then so be it.”
I was relieved she understood. I had expected her to try and
stop us. But it was nice to know that she was on our side.
“Mom, are you and dad coming back?” Mia asked, her wide eyes
filled with fear.
I crouched down to her level gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Of course I’m coming back. I just have something really important to do first.”
I had no other option–I had to come back to her. The tiny life
growing inside me depended on it. Elena trusted her to me. And I wouldn’t trust her to anyone else.
“Stay with Aunt Olivia until I get back, okay?” I kissed her forehead before standing and looking at Olivia pointedly.
“She’s safe with me” Olivia promised nodding
With that. Michael and I left, hoping–praying–that our plan would work. We headed for the least expected location, the one place they wouldn’t think to look. But if they truly had us surrounded, then we were walking right into danger.
I was terrified of what we’d find. But even more than that, I
was terrified of what would happen if we failed..
I hadn’t heard from Asher in a while. I knew he was alive, but
beyond that, I had no idea what was happening. And that
scared me.
“Asher is the strongest man I know, Michael said beside me as
if he was reading my mind. “He’ll be fine.”
Chapter151
The forest was eerily quiet as we walked, Kimberly leading the
way. I hated how unfamiliar this place felt. It put me on edge.
“You might want to keep your mouth shut,” I muttered to
Michael. I didn’t like him talking about Asher. Especially not
now. “If you had any real respect for Asher, you wouldn’t have
kidnapped him.”
Michael exhaled sharply, his frustration surfacing up again.
“Will you ever let that go? I did what I had to do to protect you.”
“Funny,” I shot back. “Because it didn’t feel like protection.”
“I’ll take responsibility for my choices,” he said, his jaw
tightening. “But you lashing out every second isn’t going to
make forgiving me any easier.”
I scoffed. “Trust me, I’ll decide when I’m ready to forgive you.”
He rolled his eyes. “Fine. Let’s just focus on getting through this
alive.”
“Sounds like a plan,” I muttered sarcastically.
We had barely taken a few more steps when a voice sliced
through the air.
Chapter 151
“Well, well, what do we have here?”
We froze. The voice came from nowhere, yet it sounded too
close for comfort.
“Show yourself, I ordered, my voice steady despite the panic.
bubbling inside me.
A chuckle followed. “Since the Queen commands it.”
A man stepped forward from the shadows.
I had never seen him before, yet something about him felt
oddly familiar. He was striking, exuding an aura of sheer
dominance.
I refused to let my unease show. “Convenient that you’d be here
waiting for us,” I said. “Care to explain how you knew we were
coming?”
Kimberly led us down this road and somehow this man showed
up as though waiting for us to come. This was the contrary of
convenience.
His lips curled into a smirk. “They underestimate you, Queen
Violet. They say you’re. oblivious. But they didn’t give you
enough credit.”
Chapter151
I stiffened. So he had spies in our ranks.
“If you want to be a true leader,” he continued, stepping closer,
“you must understand that everyone has a weakness. And
those who want power? They’ll do whatever it takes to push
their agenda.”
His eyes were unlike anything I had ever seen before–stormy,
almost ghostly. If he wasn’t standing in front of me, I would
have thought they were colorless.
“What are you?” I demanded.
He laughed, the sound cold and amused. He stepped forward,
but before he could get too close, Michael moved between us.
“Stay away from her,” he growled, his entire body tense.
I didn’t have to guess the history between them–there was
hatred burning in Michael’s eyes.
