Four months into my pregnancy, a stranger showed up at my door and beat me senseless.]
Liam rushed me to the hospital, tears streaming down his face as he begged the doctors to save me.]
But as they wheeled me toward the ICU, I overheard him talking with his friend.[]
“The guy’s been released on bail.“[]
Good. Once we get that statement dropping the charges, the case can be closed.“[]
“But… she’s carrying your child too, Liam. How you’re treating Macy is just… wrong.“]
Liam’s voice turned cold. “That’s exactly why she can’t have this baby. My firstborn can only be from Brianna. I promised her that.“[]
His friend couldn’t hide his disgust. “You could have handled this differently. Instead, you let Brianna send someone to attack her! They beat her so bad, it’s a miracle she’s even alive!”
Liam sounded desperate. “I didn’t want it to go this far. But what’s done is done.”
Just keep an eye on her. Make sure she gets the best care possible. I owe her that much. For the rest of my life, I’ll protect her. That’s my penance.“]]
The ICU doors closed, taking with them any hope for happiness I once had.[]
When I woke up, all I felt was the stabbing pain in my abdomen and the sight of blood…]

The pain in my abdomen was unbearable, even with the morphine drip.[]
Through the agony, I closed my eyes, trying to escape into sleep.[]
The door opened as Liam walked in with his buddy Ryder.]]
“She’s asleep,” Liam said, guilt briefly crossing his face before asking what mattered most to him. “The baby… it’s definitely gone, right?“[]
There was a complication…” Ryder started.
“You couldn’t even handle that? What the hell were you doing?” Ryder’s response instantly sent him into a panic.
“Not with the baby… with her…]
Liam let out a massive sigh of relief. “Thank God. As long as the baby’s gone.“]}
His words pierced my heart like needles.
Once upon a time, I’d merely stub my toe, and he’d cradle my foot in his hands.
“Let me kiss it better.” To make me laugh, he’d playfully kiss my toes.[]
I truly believed his love would wrap around me, filling my entire world.[]
But now I see it was all just my wishful thinking.
Pathetic, really.
“So what’s the complication?” Liam finally remembered to ask.
“She… she can’t have children anymore,” Ryder said, his voice heavy with pity.
“Damage to the uterine wall, right? I expected that might be the worst–case scenario,” Liam replied calmly. “Don’t worry, I’ve already contacted a specialist in New York…”
Ryder cut him off furiously. “Liam, you think everything goes according to your precious plans? She doesn’t have a uterus anymore. She will never be able to get pregnant again.“1
Liam’s composure cracked. “That’s impossible. Brianna promised me it would only be…“[]
“Did you really think your precious Brianna would stay ‘controlled‘ in that situation? That she’d stop at just causing a miscarriage?” Ryder grabbed him by the collar.
What the hell were you thinking. Liam? Is your brain made of actual shit?“]

Liam instinctively covered Ryder’s mouth, glancing at me.]
“Don’t wake her up!” He lowered his voice, warning Ryder to keep it down. Then, his tone turned hollow with regret.]
“Ryder, I need your help.“]
“Get every doctor who performed her surgery out of the country. She can never know about this.“]]
Ryder stared at him for a long moment before sighing heavily.]
“This isn’t something you can hide forever. So, what’s your endgame here?”
“I don’t know. This went beyond what I expected. My mind’s a mess.” Liam’s voice broke. “I’ll find a way to give her a child, even if we have to go abroad, even if it’s not legal…”
Ryder was silent for a moment before patting his shoulder.
“You… do what you think is right.”
He left, leaving only Liam in the room.
Liam took a deep breath, came to my bedside, and held my hand. He rubbed my hand gently against his cheek.]
The rough stubble on his face tickled against my skin through the agony. But it only made my heart ache more.[]
Whenever he made me angry, he would do this–rub my hand against his stubble. He knew my sensitive skin would get ticklish, developing tiny bumps. It always made me laugh.

“Macy, please don’t be angry with me…‘
“I’ll make it up to you, I swear. For the rest of our lives, I’ll make it up to you until you’re satisfied…“]]
I wanted so badly to forgive him. But the pain that even morphine couldn’t dull reminded me of what I’d lost–I could never be a mother.
Liam, I can’t get past this.[]
You’ve made your choice. So don’t pretend to care now.
I’ll leave and get out of your way.[]
