Just like I said–we met again soon.
In the Grand Courtroom, Judge Harper Evans stared down at Nathan.
“Mr. Whitmore, did you or did you not view the dashcam footage showing Lillian Cross forcing your daughter into the trunk of your vehicle?”
But instead of answering, Nathan turned to look at me.
“Ava… if I testify, will you come back to me?”
“Your Honor, I-”
He stopped.
Because he saw the man sitting next to me.
Gabriel Monroe.
He was gently holding my hand, as if lending me strength.
And I didn’t pull away. I even smiled at him.
Nathan’s eyes narrowed in recognition.
“Gabriel? What the hell are you doing here?!”
“I get it now. The lawyers, the bodyguards–they are all you men? No wonder someone had the guts to take Ava’s case. You just couldn’t let her go, huh?”
Gabriel met his glare without flinching.
“You’ve got it all wrong, Nathan. This time, Ava chose me. You lost her the moment you stopped
treasuring her.”
Nathan opened his mouth to speak again, but Judge Evans cut in, clearly annoyed.
“Mr. Whitmore, please stop avoiding the question. Give a direct answer.”
Nathan straightened, then smirked.
“I must’ve remembered wrong. I never saw any dashcam footage.”

He looked at me like he held the winning card.
“Ava, that USB? It’s gone. I’m the only one who can testify. I’m the only one who can get justice for
Bella.”
“Just come back to me. That’s all I want, okay?”
My lip curled in disgust.
“Nathan Whitmore, you’re more shameless than I ever imagined.”
“I will never go back to you. And I sure as hell don’t need your testimony.”
“Your Honor, I have evidence.”
Both Nathan and Lillian’s faces paled as I held up a USB drive.
I had downloaded the footage from Bella’s smartwatch.
The courtroom went silent as the screen played the video.
In it, Lillian’s crimes were laid bare.
In just four days, she subjected my daughter to nearly a hundred types of abuse.
On the final day, when Bella begged her to stop, Lillian forced her into the 100°F heat–locked trunk.
“You little brat. Still not dead? After all those allergic reactions?”
“Let’s see how long you last in there! And don’t blame me–blame your mom for looking like that bitch. Does she really think she’s someone special? I’m supposed to be her damn stand–in?!”
“If Nathan wants me to be her replacement, then I’ll start by killing her daughter. That way, she won’t be around to fight me for the inheritance!”
The entire room turned to Lillian in horror.
This wasn’t an accident.
It was premeditated murder.
Her face went ghost–pale.
Because of the constant surveillance she’d set up, Bella never had a chance to call me.

But she hadn’t counted on how smart my little girl was.
Bella had quietly recorded everything. And in her final act of defiance, she slipped the smartwatch under the car–where Lillian couldn’t find it.
The pain in my chest was unbearable.
Lillian was sentenced to death.
Nathan, charged with destruction of evidence, aiding and abetting, and ordering an assault, was
also headed to prison.
As they were escorted out, Nathan screamed behind me.
“Gabriel Monroe! You think you’ve won?!”
“My legal team’s already working on this. I’ll be out in no time!”
*Ava’s mine!”
