Chapter7
Nathan Whitmore stumbled home in a daze, haunted by the image of Eleanor Sinclair’s tortured face… and the way she died.
His mind drifted to that bitter winter years ago–after his parents passed away, when his relatives took every last cent of the compensation money and left him to rot.
No one wanted to take him in. School was out of the question.
He nearly froze to death on the street.
Until Eleanor and I found him.
We took him in, fed him, gave him a bed to sleep in, and used what little savings we had to put him through school.
He had promised–sworn–that he’d treat me well, that he’d honor Eleanor like his own mother.
But he failed.
He hadn’t just failed me.
He failed her, too.
How did it come to this?
He the
He thought of the look I gave him earlier.
In just one day, that was the second time I’d looked at him like that.
Cold. Distant. Full of disgust.
And in over a decade together, I had never looked at him that way.
His heart sank.
I called him my enemy.
Nathan let out a bitter laugh and shook his head.
In his mind, the whole world could turn on him–except me.
Because I was the light that pulled him out of the dark.

If even that light had abandoned him… he didn’t know if he’d survive it.
The second he stepped into the mansion, he saw Lillian Cross lifting the handcrafted crystal keepsake the one he once made for me–and smashing it against the floor.
“You bitch!” she hissed. “You’re not even here anymore and he’s still thinking about you!”
When she turned around and saw Nathan’s face, pale’and tight with fury, she panicked for a second before faking a playful smile.
“Nathan, here you are! I saw your assistant drop you off, so I thought I’d bring the car back for
you.”
“I saw this crystal thingy on the shelf–it looked cute, so I picked it up to look at it and… oops! I dropped it. They say you made this for Ava, right? Well, I want one too-
“Since you’re divorced now, does that mean we can get married? Maybe we can use a new one as our engagement token?”
Nathan looked down.
The tiny figurines inside the shattered crystal ball–the couple embracing–were crushed under
Lillian’s heel, beyond repair.
Just like their past.
Without warning, he grabbed Lillian by the throat, his eyes like a frozen abyss.
“You? You think you deserve that spot? You think I didn’t see everything that just happened?”
“Lillian, I told you–you reminded me of who Ava used to be. That’s all. You were just a distraction. Did you really think you could take her place?”
“You want money? Fine. You want status? Sure. I turned a blind eye when Bella died, but after
hurting my y daughter, you went after Ava’s mother too. Tell me, how is Ava supposed to survive that?!”
There was nothing more terrifying than a man who’d snapped.
Nathan tied Lillian up, then brought in a dozen beggars from the slums,
He filmed everything.
And then… he sent me the footage.

As if it were some kind of gift.
On camera, in the middle of the chaos, he still spoke gently.
“Ava… look. Everything your mother suffered, I made Lillian pay for–tenfold. Can you forgive me
now?”
I nearly threw up watching it.
But I saved the video… then called the police.

Just as Lillian thought she was going to die there, the mansion’s gates were kicked open and officers poured in.
They quickly restrained the beggars–and Nathan.
“Mr. Whitmore,” the lead officer said sternly, “you’ve been accused by Ava Sinclair of conspiracy
to commit assault. You need to come with us.”
Nathan’s eyes widened in disbelief.
He never thought I’d actually turn him in.
Lillian, seeing a way out, laughed maniacally.
“You idiot! All that grand display of love, all that revenge on my behalf… and she still sold you out! You think Ava gives a damn about you?!”
“Officers! He’s the one who told those freaks to hurt me–arrest him already!”
But before she could finish her rant, the cold click of handcuffs silenced her.
“Lillian Cross, right?” the officer said. “You’re being charged with child abuse resulting in death, and conspiracy to commit assault. You’ll be coming with us, too.”
