Chapter6
Nathan froze for a moment before his face twisted into a frown.
“What nonsense are you spouting? I never let anyone hurt her! Kill herself? What are you even-”
His assistant burst through the door, face pale as paper.
“Mr. Whitmore… I just called the Memorial Chapel. Mrs. Sinclair is there right now–she’s arranging her mother’s funeral.”
“What?! No. That’s impossible. I just saw her yesterday. She was fine!”
Nathan’s mind couldn’t comprehend it–but he noticed the assistant trembling.
The assistant handed over a few photos. “Someone from the center took these last night… right. before she passed.”
Nathan grabbed the pictures impatiently then went still.
The images were… brutal.
“This can’t be… I told the bodyguards to let her go. I just wanted to threaten Ava… make her give out
the USB. I didn’t mean…”
“Sir, it wasn’t the bodyguards. I questioned everyone. Apparently, Lillian brought a few guys from the streets last night and had them harrass Ms. Sinclair. They stayed all night. By morning… she
was gone.”
Nurse Margaret spat at Nathan’s feet.
“Ms. Sinclair and Ava treated you like family. If it weren’t for them, you’d still be a nobody. And this is how you repay them? You’ll burn in hell, Nathan Whitmore!”
Nathan suddenly remembered what I’d said at the office that morning.
It was true.
My mother was dead.
And not just dead–she died in the cruelest way imaginable.
He couldn’t even begin to imagine the pain I must’ve felt–losing both a daughter and a mother in
such a short time.

And the worst part? He didn’t believe me when I told him.
Heart pounding, he ran out, desperate, driving straight to the crematorium.
By the time he arrived, it was too late.
The cremation had already finished.
I stood there, clutching two urns in my arms–my mother’s and my daughter’s.
Grief swallowed me whole..
So this was what it felt like… to lose everything.
And it all happened because I loved the wrong man.
“Ava!”
Nathan called out, his eyes red–but he didn’t dare approach.
“Ava, what happened to your mom? Why… why would she kill her self? I didn’t even get a chance to take care of her-”
I looked at him with cold, bitter amusement.
“Take care of her? You mean by shoving her head into a microwave?”
I just wanted
“No–it wasn’t me! I swear, to use it to threaten you! I told them to let her go–you
saw it!”
“I know it wasn’t you,” I said flatly. “It was Lillian. She ordered it.”
Nathan’s face darkened with disbelief.
“Lillian? No, she’s a little clumsy, but she’s an innocent girl. She’d never-”
Even now,
he chose to believe Lillian?
I silently pulled out my phone and played the surveillance footage.
When he heard the vulgar threats on the video, all the color drained from his face.
“Ava… I’m sorry. I didn’t know she would go that far… I swear, I didn’t-”
“Do you think ‘I didn’t know‘ makes it better?” I snapped. “You’re the one who spoiled her. You

gave her power. Without you, she would never have the audacity to touch my mom!”
“You’re the one who started it, Nathan. You’re the real culprit.”
“We’re divorced. From this moment on, you’re my enemy. Just the sight of you makes me sick.”
“Divorced? No, that agreement–you tricked me into signing it! I don’t accept it!”
Nathan lunged forward to grab my hand.
But before he could touch me, several bodyguards stepped out from the shadows and pinned him
down.
I looked at him coldly.
“What, Nathan? Trying to steal the evidence and destroy it again?”
“I didn’t–Ava, who are these people?”
I gave him a chilling smile.
“That’s none of your business.”
“But don’t worry,” I said, turning away.
“You and I… will be seeing each other very soon.”
