“Helen,” Lucas grabbed my hand, water droplets dripping from his black hair. He pursed his lips, “I’m serious, I was too harsh before. We’ve come a long way to get here, there’s no need to make it so ugly.”
“If you came back, I could transfer Kelly to the branch office so that she won’t appear in front of you again, how about that?”
I looked at the man in front of me, whom I had loved since my teenage years, feeling a bit dazed.
Lucas meant to whitewash the situation, and I continued to revolve around him as I did before.
His detachment, his infidelity, I pretended they never happened.
But how is that possible?
How is it possible to tolerate someone’s betrayal when you love them?
But he said it so casually, as if he was certain that I would continue to endure for him.
Because he knew, I loved him.
He used my love as a weapon to hold me hostage.
Ihave never realized so clearly, as I do now, that the pure and passionate love that I had in my youth has been distorted and corrupted by time, becoming unrecognizable.
“Get out!” I wanted to close the door, but he firmly resisted. “Helen,” he seemed somewhat puzzled.
“Weren’t you just concerned about Kelly? What do you really want, and what else do you want me to do?”
The difference in strength between men and women is too great. He easily opened the door, but behind me, a voice was heard.
“Helen, who is this?”

He came to borrow the bathroom because the water heater in his house was broken.
But by some strange twist of fate, I didn’t utter those words and instead went along with Neil’s explanation. Lucas’s face turned pale, and for a moment, I felt like he was about to turn around and leave.
But he actually endured it, took a deep breaths, and reluctantly regained his composure.
“Helen, I can understand if you went out to play when you were sad, I don’t mind.”
This sentence doesn’t mind how it sounds, it carries a taste of gritted teeth and resentiment
Luras closed his eyes and said, “If you come back now, I will pretend that this never happened.”
In an instant, 1 almost wanted to applaud him.
What a generous and magnandinous attitude it was!
I mocked, “Lucas, you wouldn’t happen to be saying that you cheated too, and now this whole thing is evened out, so we can just continue sharing a bed as if nothing happened, right?”
Lucas remained silent, his gaze conveying his thoughts.
I found it extremely ridiculous. Suddenly, I didn’t know what exactly the emotions I had been guarding all these years
years were.
It seemed that, without my knowledge, it had already grown into an unbearable and ugly monster.

Neil, however, suddenly laughed.
He looked Lucas up and down, with a half–smile on his face, and said, “I heard that you found another young one, huh? Indeed, who doesn’t like the young ones? They are fresh and full of energy.”
“Helen liked me too,” he held me tighter. “I’m only 21 this year, and Helen is already mine. How could I possibly turn back and look for an old cabbage like you? I have what you have, and I even have what you don’t. Wake up, senior.”
He called him “senior” with every word, but every sentence he said struck at the heart. I looked at Lucas’s extremely ugly face and was a little afraid that he would be so angry that he would faint.
