Chapter 19
Elvira’s breath caught, her vision blurred with tears, and she trembled uncontrollably with fear.
“Vesper, I don’t want to be taken back by him. I can’t endure that torment again.”
Even after three years, the memories of the time in the palace remained deeply etched in her mind, impossible to forget.
That day, she and Vesper had fled the palace, constantly in hiding, changing disguises repeatedly, and only after great effort did they finally escape Asteria City.
Only now did Elvira realize the anxiety and helplessness that had been building within her.
Though she was an unloved illegitimate daughter and had led a hard life, she had never lived independently.
Shortly after coming of age, she had been sent to the palace to serve, enduring countless hardships, but at least she had not worried about food and shelter.
Now, though free, she had nowhere to go.
So, Elvira clung to Vesper, refusing to let go, following him wherever he went.
Perhaps because Vesper had carried her almost the entire way during their escape, offering her food, he had grown accustomed to her presence and did not drive her away.
He treated her as if she were a beautiful pet.
Later, Elvira gradually became independent, learning martial arts from him.
With the money they had and the skills she had previously acquired, she delved into business management.
Occasionally, Vesper would go on missions, and upon returning injured, he would stay by her side to recuperate, helping her craft disguises.
Over time, people began to assume they were husband and wife, and Elvira did not deny it.
After all, being a married woman made business dealings easier.
So Vesper accepted it.
Until one time, Vesper was poisoned and soaked in a stream to alleviate the effects.
It was the first time Elvira saw his true face and truly understood her feelings for him.
So, she mustered the courage to confess her love.
Even though Vesper warned her that he could lose his life at any moment and could not promise to grow old with her, she did not care.
After all, his and her lives were actually bound together long ago. If Vesper were gone, perhaps she would soon be found by Alistair. The outcome was unimaginable.
In the end, Vesper agreed and gave her a wedding, just for the two of them.
They had only been happy for three years; why did Alistair come looking for her?
Elvira was filled with resentment.
She thought this and voiced it.
“Vesper, the border cities have long been reclaimed. Alistair and Isabeau face no more obstacles. If he wants to marry her as queen, no one would dare oppose. Why is he still searching for me? I don’t understand!”
“Wouldn’t it be better for them to continue their entanglement? Why must he torment me? What did I do wrong?”
Vesper gently stroked her hair, his brow slightly furrowed.
“Because Alistair is a madman.”
“After you left, he killed Isabeau, summoned a sorcerer to call your soul, and when that failed, he tried every means to find you, simply because he
believes he loves you.”
“Would you leave with him?”
His usually calm voice now carried a hint of tension.
