“Watch your mouth!” Sebastian snapped. “Can’t you see the family elders are here?”
His heart thudded, heavy and uneasy. Likely Grace was upset again.
She hadn’t been herself since the miscarriage. Always pale, always quiet. The thought made something sour coil in his chest.
They could always try again, once Seraphina gave birth to a proper heir…
The servant looked ashen, his voice shaking. “My lord… the lady… she’s dead. She collapsed and… she’s gone.”
Sebastian’s pupils shrank. The words slammed into him like a thunderclap. He stumbled back a step.
His eyes went bloodshot, a storm of grief and fury.
“What the hell are you saying?! How dare you curse my wife-!”

“I–it’s true!” he stammered. “The physician said… she was too weak after the miscarriage. Her moods were unsteady… Her death was sudden, but peaceful…”
Seraphina’s face lit up with joy.
So her plan had worked.
She’d meant only to provoke Grace into demanding a separation. Instead… Grace had died.

Seraphina squeezed out a few pitiful tears and clutched Sebastian’s hand. “My lord… no one wanted this. I’m sure Grace wouldn’t want you to destroy yourself over grief.”

Her words were cut short by the sound of skin on skin.
The blow sent her flying, her temple cracking against the gilded armrest of a highborn seat.
“Ahh!” she cried out in agony, the left side of her face screaming in pain.
Sebastian stood over her, his gaze sharp as a blade, his expression ice–cold.
“You think you have the right to call her Grace?”
“If it weren’t for the child you carry, I would’ve never let you near her.”
“Seraphina, let me make this clear.” His voice dropped, menacingly calm. “The only reason you’re still breathing is because of that unborn child. It belongs to Grace now. If anything happens to her–anything–I’ll bury you and that bastard right beside her.”
She froze.
Stunned, shattered, and for the first time, afraid.
She had never expected it to turn out like this.
