“Wait!” Britney gently sat up from Hubert’s lap, her gaze innocent as she tearfully said, “Natalie, I… I really don’t want to destroy your life with Hugh… I don’t want my presence to affect your marriage, and I certainly don’t want to hurt Hugh and the Lawson family’s reputation. Don’t worry, once I feel better, I’ll go abroad and leave this sorrowful place…” In the unseen shadows, Britney raised an eyebrow, giving Natalie a provocative glance. But just as quickly, she reverted to a helpless, fragile expression, like a wounded and homeless little deer. For a moment, Natalie felt disgusted by Britney’s mocking tone. “There’s no need to make it so complicated. I don’t have the power to force you to go abroad. Just make it clear to the Lawson family that I didn’t push you into the water…” Britney grasped Hubert’s arm, her face flustered as she desperately explained, “Hugh, Madam Madeline, Hannah, it wasn’t Natalie who pushed me into the water. It was… I… I accidentally fell in…” As she spoke, she cried, her voice growing weaker as if speaking in her sleep. “It was my child who didn’t deserve to come into this world…” With that, Britney collapsed into Hubert’s arms, her shoulders trembling. In her heart, Britney sneered. Natalie, didn’t you want me to tell the truth? I’ve told them. Do you think the Lawson family will believe you? “Britney, stop crying. I have a confession letter here. I had Natalie sign it. We’ll kick her out of the Lawson family, and from now on, you’ll be my sister-in-law.” Hannah pulled out the confession letter she had prepared in the car, grabbed Natalie’s hand, and as Natalie’s blood from her forehead left a clear bloody handprint on the paper, she presented it to Britney, saying with an air of accomplishment, “Here it is, Britney. This letter clearly states that Natalie pushed you into the water out of jealousy, causing you to miscarry. It also says Hubert had already asked her for a divorce, but she refused because she wanted a huge alimony. Britney, you’re not the so-called mistress, it’s Natalie who refuses to let go of the Lawson family resources.” Madeline put the confession letter with Natalie’s handprint into her handbag. “Hmph, thinking she can get alimony from our Lawson family? Dream on! Son, when you divorce her, make sure she leaves with nothing. I’ll put this evidence online, and no one will dare speak ill of our family!” Thinking marrying into the Lawson family would turn her into someone important? What a joke! Even if the Lawson family was rich, they would never let a woman like Natalie have it easy. “Alright, enough talking!” Hubert’s face darkened as he frowned, calling an end to the farce. “Dylan, take her back!” Dylan had already had enough of the scene. Upon hearing Hubert, he immediately helped Natalie to her feet and led her out of the room. “Mrs. Lawson, you should take care of your wound first.” Dylan noticed blood still dripping from Natalie’s forehead and grabbed some gauze from the nurse’s station to cover the wound. “Thank you, but no need.” It was time for her to face the consequences. Only through enough pain would she truly see Hubert’s indifference. After returning to her apartment from the hospital, Natalie fell sick for three days, with a high fever of 103.6°F. She didn’t take any medicine. The fuzzy feeling was quite pleasant. At least she didn’t have to get out of bed to cook and could actually sleep. After three days of sleep, it felt like she had caught up on all the rest she’d missed over the past two years. She had insisted on not having a maid at her and Hubert’s home, because she stubbornly believed it was their private space, just for the two of them. Over the two years of marriage, she had washed and ironed every piece of Hubert’s clothing by hand. His clothes, even his underwear and socks, were carefully folded and neatly arranged in the drawers. During those three days, Hubert didn’t return even once, nor did he make any phone calls. The thought of her husband being with another woman made Natalie see her marriage to Hubert for what it truly was. It was a complete joke. She had given up two years of her youth and even a kidney, but Hubert had never shown her even a fraction of the love or care she had hoped for. Rather than continue this endless entanglement, she decided to let go and find herself again. Natalie shook her drowsy head and, leaning on the wall, made her way to the kitchen to boil some water. She planned to have a cup of warm milk before going to the Lawson Building to talk to Hubert about divorce. With a click, the apartment door was pushed open, and Hubert, who had been gone for three days, walked in, carrying a cold air with him. Behind him followed five men, each with their own distinct style.
