Chapter 11 Have You Found Her?
Finished
Soon, Dylan returned from the club manager’s office. Dylan clenched his fingers, feeling like his boss might be ready to kill someone as he reported, “Mr. Lawson, all of today’s surveillance footage of the club has been wiped today!”
“Go find out where Natalie has been today,” Hubert said in a deep voice, his entire presence exuding an oppressive aura.
While driving along the way. Hubert looked up and realized his car had stopped at the house he shared with Natalie. Habits are truly terrifying things.
He had already given this apartment to Natalie. Although he no longer had feelings for her, there were indeed some things he hadn’t handled well himself throughout their marriage. All he could do was try to make up for them financially.
After placing his thumb at the fingerprint lock, the door to the apartment was opened with a click. Inside, the room was pitch–dark. There was a slight chill in the air. Natalie isn’t home yet? Where could she have gone this late?
Hubert frowned. He didn’t bother turning on the lights, and called Dylan right away. “What do you mean you can’t find any trace of her?
Hearing his boss‘ frosty tone, Dylan shuddered. “Mr. Lawson, we’ve checked all the hotels, restaurants, malls, airports, train stations, hospitals… Basically everywhere we could. But we really can’t find Mrs. Lawson. It looks like… she’s disappeared!”
“Nonsense!” Hubert rubbed his still–throbbing head and couldn’t help but curse in his mind. “She’s a living person. How could she vanish into thin air? Keep looking!”
Hubert didn’t turn on the lights or return to his bedroom. He passed out right away on the sofa. The hazy moonlight outside streamed through the apartment’s full–length window, leaving a glow on his extremely handsome face.
Half–asleep and half–awake, Hubert felt like his parched throat was on fire. “Natalie, I’m thirsty. Pour me a glass of water…”
Before he could finish, he realized he didn’t make sense and jolted himself awake. He sat up on the sofa and smacked his forehead hard twice, as if trying to force Natalie out of his thoughts.
Hubert walked to the kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, and then turned to enter Natalie’s bedroom. Each of them had their own bedroom, and he rarely entered her room.
Opening the wardrobe, he saw all of Natalie’s belongings still there. He narrowed his eyes. Humph, this deceitful woman’s trying to mess with me!
On the nightstand, a red heart–shaped card caught his attention. Hubert picked up the card, and he was greeted with a line of delicate handwriting. It read, “Dear husband, happy second wedding anniversary! May we continue our journey together for years to come!”
Next to the card was a piece of art that was tied up. It was likely Natalie’s wedding anniversary gift for him
As he slowly unrolled the painting, Hubert’s eyes widened. It was the genuine work of the reclusive artist Matthew Reid, a piece he had long sought but could never obtain!
Natalie must have found out when she had brought him lunch at work and overheard him casually asking Dylan to look for Matthew’s artwork. Originally, it was meant to be a gift for his grandfather’s seventieth birthday.
However, he couldn’t believe that considering Natalie’s background, she could get her hands on artwork that even he couldn’t get. Even if she did find it, she wouldn’t be able to afford it.
He had always provided her with a monthly allowance, but she had only ever used a tiny portion, claiming that her daily expenses didn’t require much money. Yet, he had seen her wearing a few elegantly–designed pieces of jewelry that weren’t from him. Where did she get the money for those?
Hubert pursed his lips together. It seemed he had never really paid attention to Natalie’s life.
Suddenly, Hubert’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen. It was Dylan calling. He asked, “Have you found her?”
Dylan replied, “Not yet… but Mr. Lawson, there’s something I want to report to you.”
