Chapter 8
“Lucy must’ve gone to Rachel’s place to complain about us again,” Yvonne said. “They’ll probably show up together tomorrow to make a scene. She always does this-never anything new.”
Robert sighed. “You’ve really been through a lot with me, honey.”
“As long as I’m with you, I don’t feel it’s hard,” Yvonne said. “But now that Nina’s back, she shouldn’t have to live like this.”
“I know,” Robert replied. “I’ll take care of it by next week at the latest.”
Nina hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but with her sharp hearing, it was hard not to.
Still, she didn’t know what Robert meant by take care of it. Before she could think about it more, a heavy wave of sleepiness hit her like a truck. She drifted off fast.
The night grew quiet.
No one knew how much time passed before a figure wearing a big white mask crept up to Nina’s room.
It was Lucy.
“Stupid little brat. I can’t believe you still remember what happened. Guess I’ll have to shut you up for good,” she muttered under her breath, slowly pushing the door open.
Then, copying something she saw in a TV show, she let out a creepy, weak moan. “I’m gonna kill you…”
At that moment, Nina’s eyes flew open. Her face twisted in pain.
Her head throbbed like a thousand needles were stabbing her brain-or maybe a hammer smashing through it. It felt like a hundred tiny people were jumping up and down inside her skull. Her head was about to explode.
Sweat soaked through her clothes. Her breathing got louder, faster.
In the faint moonlight, she saw a round, shadowy figure slowly moving toward her. She bit down hard, staying silent, eyes wide open.
Lucy kept up her little act, dreaming about scaring Nina so badly she’d run out and fall in the river. She reached the bed, totally unaware that Nina was already sitting up.
“I’m gonna kill you…” Lucy mumbled again.
Nina scoffed. For a second, something wild and excited flashed in her eyes. A strange, twisted smile crawled across her lips. Then, like lightning, her hand shot out and grabbed Lucy’s throat.
Lucy almost fainted from shock. Only now did she realize how twisted and cold Nina’s face looked-like she might actually kill her the next second. This Nina was nothing like the girl from earlier that day.
“You asked for it,” Nina said, her hand tightening around Lucy’s throat. Her face showed both pain and pleasure, like two different souls were fighting for control of her body.
The moonlight was pale and cold. Nina’s long hair hung loose, and her voice came out in a low whisper through her teeth.
Her eyes glowed red, her skin ghost-white, and there was a strange, broken beauty in her face. To Lucy, she looked like a demon straight out of hell.

“L-let go!” Lucy gasped. She tried to pry Nina’s fingers off, but it was useless. Those slim fingers were as strong as steel.
“Who’s there?” Robert’s voice suddenly came from the next room. Nina’s eyes flew open. She let go.
Lucy dropped to the floor, coughing like crazy. But even then, she was so angry she grabbed the old fan nearby and swung it at Nina. “I’ll kill you, you psycho-”
“Stop right there!” Robert’s shout echoed through the room.
The light snapped on. Robert stormed in and yanked the fan away. Then he saw Nina. She was soaked in cold sweat, her lips moved a little, and then she passed out.
His face turned pale instantly. “Nina!”
